Speedometer fault

I have a issue in the Coupe with the Cluster. The Speedo doesnt work and stays at 0 the Odometer doesnt move and the trip computer is stuck on 200mpg.

I checked all the wiring at each location from start to finish and had continuity throughout so all good there.

I then swapped the cluster from my Avant on to the Coupe and everything worked fine speed registered Odometer started reading again and the MPG was no longer stuck at 200.

Has anyone experienced this and what could the fault be ? I had my cluster refurbed not long ago which included a full circuit board refurb and new MPG and clock displays.

I have opened up the cluster and everything seems intact so where should i look ?

Checked all cogs today and they are fine

You have an electrical fault if the speedo isn't working. Is the refurb under warranty?

Thats what i am thinking something electrical. Warranty has expired now

You can check the voltage regulator and connection pins are good. Failing that, I recently fixed a cluster by swapping a speedo from a V6 cluster. Just check they are the same as there are a couple of different versions and they are not interchangeable.

That black electrolytic capacitor as seen above in pics 1 and 4 above can fail. So worth checking that. Dry solder joints may also be a possible cause.

Newer clusters have torx screws on the faces. Make sure it's a vdo one and try and get the same year as yours.

Found a cracked joint so will reflow the solder.


Tested both capacitors and one of them were shorted out so have ordered a replacement.

After reflowing the board and changing the capacitor i took the car for a drive and the speedo worked but the trip computer was still stuck at 200 and the odometer was still not moving. The next time i drove the car again speedo was dead.

What i have done is buy a new cluster as close to the S2 one as possible and used the speedometer unit from there on my S2 cluster.
At last all is good trip computer odometer and speedo all working !



I had to change the mileage on the new speedo unit to match my current mileage which is alot lower.

I suspect there was a problem with the PCB on the old unit as i also removed the speedo motor and tested using the car battery and it was fine.
