    Faulty Speedometer

    Hi all

Have been trying to get to the bottom of my speedo fault.

Fault at hand : speedo and odometer don't work. Will be traveling around 80km/h and speedo needle will only go up to about 40-50 and drop down to 0 when slowing down.

Little Gear has also been replaced inside the unit itself for the odometer.

Currently I have checked the pcb solder joins all look OK, could probably do with a touch up.

Capacitors have checked out as fine.

Speedo motor is also a pass.

Are there any other items that could/need to be checked?

Have you cleaned all the pins on the cluster. Had a similar fault last year. Cleaned up the pins with some fine emery and applied some dielectric grease and it been fine ever since.

I'll give the dielectric grease a go this weekend. Hopefully that will fix the issue.

I have not checked vss, assumed wasnt necessary seen as though it was giving a signal to speedo, just not correct speed coming up. Would it be a good idea to check this as well?

There are 2 or 3 sets of long pins that bridge between the circuit boards and the instruments inside the cluster. The speedo signal travels through a set of these pins. The pins themselves can become unsoldered from the circuit board and the tiny spring connectors can be corroded.
To access the pins you will need to disassemble the cluster but if you're already been in there to replaced the odometer cog you will be fine.

Still no success after using fine emery and dielectric grease on the 3 sets of pins ( 1 for speedo and other 2 for tacho?)

currently the way I've tested the speedo motor is 12v directly onto the Terminals for the motor. Is there a way I can connect 12v across the 4 pins to ensure pcb and other components on it are operational?

Current pcb condition for the speedo.

I have noticed it does smell a little bit off around the coil where odo gear goes. A smell id usually link to toast electronics
