    Hall sensor

    Afternoon all,
I don't think anyone is keeping an eye on my old post any more (http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthr...t=20836&page=3) so i'll summarise with... Got myself some cables and vagcom (how did i live without it?) and the ****** gave me this fault.....

    Address 01: Engine
    Controller: 895 907 404
    Component: MOTOR PMC 1
    Coding: 0261200484
    Shop #: 1267356530
    1 Fault Found:
    00515 - Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40)
    30-00 - Open or Short to B+
    Readiness: N/A

Hall Sensor eh? I'm now going to investigate the connector to the hall sensor (you never know) and see if maybe one of the earths that terminate nearby could be responsible (is this possible? they look solid enough but a tad old, maybe a bit rusty.) So apart from these simple possibilities I reckon i'm looking at a new hall sesnor or maybe even a pin sheared off the flywheel (cheers for pointing this possibility out twoqu). I'm just thinking that there wasn't a spark from the coil when I held a cable to the block. maybe this means it's at the ECU side of things?)
    Advice is always welcome.
And i've PM'd Paul N to see if maybe he'll give my ECU a once over in case it's just not speaking to the sensor. Haven't heard back so I assume he's off doing something impressive.
    cheers

    Just been looking at http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/troubl...g/20vhall.html

Says that the engine wouldn't cut out if the hall sensor died while the engine was running. that doesn't fit will my problem since I had just left the house and turned a corner when the engine cut out completely. It would be so very intruiging in a beard scratching kind of way if I wasn't so frustrated that the bloody car is just sitting there doing nothing. agh!

As you say, the engine wont cut (until you go to restart) if you have a Hall sender fault, however whatever it is, there is still an intermittent fault there.

On a 1991, you presumably have the 3B, in which case the Hall sender is really easy to get to (compared to the ABY ) as it's located in the distributor, and not hidden away behind the cambelt.
      Past: S2 ABY coupe RS2 spec with lots of mods, S4 B5 saloon, RS6 C5 saloon, S8 D2 FL, RS4 B7 saloon, S4 B6 avant

      Present: S4 B8 avant, MRC Stage 2

I reckon it must be worth removing the cam cover , its not hard, and wont cost you anything... then you can see if its the dizzy gear, sounds like it might be this...?
Honda CBR 1100XX Blackbird Turbo....undergoing major changes.....
S2 Coupe... bit easier off the line...
'03 ZX12-R daily hack.... lots of nice bolt ons...

thanks for the pointers lads. The dizzy is pretty far back on teh right hand side but it looks like I can get at it. i'll take the top off when I get a bit of daylight and time. Is the gear just as it sounds? a small gear that turns within the dizzy to spin the rotar arm?

One thing though - I ran a lead from the coil to just off the block but didn't get a spark when i turned the ignition over. just wondering if an ECU prob could tell me there's a hall sender fault and result in no spark coming from the coil and getting as far at the distributor? I'll need to try this again just in case i'm an idiot.

OR.. does the hall sensor send a signal to the ECU, which then tells the coil to send a spark? This would make sense.

When I get this ****** running again I think i'll have a BBQ and buy a few crates of beer, catch myself a cow and invite any of you that can make it to Glasgow up for a free afternoon of meat and alcohol.

You can also try to remove dizzy cover and try to strat car and watch if dizzy is running. If not then it's gear.

If it's gear you should buy metal one rather than blastic.

You can't buy that gear from audi I think. They sell you only whole distributor.
