If you are going to change the dizzy gear as well as the hall sender, I would definately buy a new dizzy, this way you get metal gear, new hall sender and new rotor arm (not sure if the cap comes with it too, but I would imagine you get a new cap too)
I believe them to be around 100 + VAT which means its better value, and a lot less hassle

    ebay link

My hall-sensor is from Audi 80 1,6iKat 92--94 and price was 33 euro.

cheers siliz. i'll look and see if I can find a hall sensor by itself. I was also thinking that replacing the whole distributor would solve any problem with the dizzy gear too. unless the gears can be bought separately too?

Hall sensor can be replaced. You have to take dizzy out and gear of the dizzy. Then dizzy axle can come out and you can access hall sensor.

that's a damn fine idea. I'll look at paul's site and see if I can check that before I do anything drastic. and i'll give vagparts a bell. i'lllet you know how I go.
    cheers yet again

So i'm really looking at replacing the hall sensor then it seems. I think the hall sensor is in the dizzy for the 3B so given that there can be dizzy gear problems too i'm probably best replacing the whole dizzy yes? stealer says £120 + vat. any ideas where to go for better? No luck on vagparts.com

Does the hall sensor reply on the pin on the flywheel to get a reading by the way? Just thinking back that one of you told me before that there's a chance the pin could have broken off.

Also can I rule out a bad earth on the basis of the vagcom results?

cheers. your wisdom is very much appreciated.
If the pin on the flywheel had snapped off, then I'd expect to see a code given for that in the vag-com check.
Hall sender is inside the dizzy on a 3B yes. I'm not 100% sure if it can be replaced on it's own, but would have thought so.
Just because Vagparts haven't got it listed on their website doesn't mean they can't get one (either the hall sender or the complete distributor). Would be hard to list everything for every model ever. Give them a ring is the best way.
Have you checked for continuity to the ECU for the wiring from the hall sender? Pauls S2central.net site has the pinout info showing which pin on the main connector the ECU contains the hall sender signal. A simple continuity test will at least tell you if the wiring is sound to the ECU.

I think you are meaning the Engine speed sensor? That always pulls up if the codes are taken whilst the engine is not running.
If the vag-com test showed a hall sender, then that'll be the reason for the non-start.
If the ECU sees no signal from it whilst trying to start, you'll never get a spark. The ECU needs top know the position of the camshaft, so it can see which valve is open and which piston is where, so it can determine which cylinder the fire first on start up.
No hall effect signal, NO spark.

cool. definitely worth doing then you think? where did you get yours by the way? maybe save me some hunting about. you say packs (plural) - are there more than one? I thought it was just a single until. or am I using the wrong term for the electrical device that sends the spark down the main coil lead to the dizzy?
    cheers

No idea bout your question but, i had suspected faulty coil packs, i changed the whole lot just to be sure, and wow what a power boost. I would of changed them just for the power boost never mind the suspected faults.

    started a topic coil pack

    coil pack

now that Derek's helped me test my ECU and I know that it's fine... just wondering something. if I can't get a spark from the coil pack is it still possible I have a fault dizzy? (whether that's a hall sensor or dizzy gear). If there's no spark from the coil pack is it more likely the earth from the coil or maybe the pack itself?

OR.. if the hall sensor was knackered would it perhaps not send a signal back to the ECU, meaning that the ECU wouldn't tell the coil pack to send the spark?

    If you catch my drift.
Working...
