cheers Siliz. Is there just one? Is there anything in particular I should or shouldn't be doing when I take it off? (just thinking if anything will affect the timing)
    cheers

if anybody's still watching this post... any ideas how to remove the dizzy on my 3B? I got the dizzy cap off tonight but i can't see how to get the dizzy itself off. there's a sort of metal finger coming round the neck where the dizzy joins the engine (didn't get a pic. sorry). dunno what it does so I don't want to touch it. I can see a bolt head that may be a possibility but it looked more like a plain domed head (bit rusted) rather than an allen head or something.

how's my dizzy cap look? I can't remember how much the contacts should/can be worn. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/215/4...8314bbeb_o.jpg

    cheers

really silly question time... Would a buggrd battery cause any problems? The battery in the car looks to be smaller than the original and even though I fully charged it, then was out to nosy about, the car was turning over OK but the battery was completely flat after another couple of days sitting there. I wouldn't expect a battery to die that quickly. May be unrelated but i'm sure i'll need to fork out for a new one anyway.

cheers. sent him an email too. Since the dealer is coming up with 2 different ones (it'd be bad luck to pay for one and find out it's wrong) looks like i'm hunting for the part number on the old one tonight.

Good find mate. cheers. I've sent him an email to see if he can tell me anything without the part no off the old dizzy. If he can get one for me it looks to be a damn site cheaper than the stealer.

Just spotted this, might be worth an ask, looks like he can supply Hall senders too, but he will probably ask for the numbers printed on your existing dizzy...

If you can find a 7A Dizzy, you will find the rotor arm needs replacing... BUT it is possible to get a dremel or similar and trim down the rotor arm and make it the correct size... (11mm wide) You can then try it and see if it works...
Might be worth trying places like allaudi to see if they have a used one...
The 7A dizzy is identical apart from the rotor arm...

just looking at Paul's s2central site. This in particular
"If G40 fails, the engine cannot be restarted (as the ECU needs a reference firing point). However, if G40 fails while the engine is running, it will continue to run by deriving the firing points from signals received from G4 and G28. In addition, the ECU will retard the ignition by 6 degrees as a safety measure."
my car died while running and won't now start. don't know if that fits in with hall sensor issues. guess i'm only going to fid out by getting out there and dirty as soon s I can. maybe replace the whole dizzy and see if it fixes it.

yeah, i was looking at those dizzy gears on ebay but they're going for silly money and as chris says, with a whole dizzy i'd get the gear and the hall sensor. audi want £105 or £125 + vat with my old dizzy (2 types apparently). vagparts only have one of the types and i'm looking at a straight buy of £250.
Time's my big problem just now though. time to get out and investigate properly.
and none of this is doing my head in as much as my missus going on about getting rid of it.
