sunroof upgrade: A6 motor with rotary wheel mod

    Hi,

I am converting my crappy sunroof control button to a rotary selector from an A6 (95 model). I will glue the rotary selector in my modded sunroof plate and already checked that the sunroof motor fits in the sunroof cabinet, which works just fine. I can open the sunroof with the special 'wrench', that sits in the panel, in case of electical failure.

I am facing the problem that my original sunroof motor and button unit have different power cable connections compared to the new unit I am installing.

I have attached a picture of the new control unit that has a power connector with 4 pins, while my original control unit has just 2 (+ and -).

On the new unit it says:

    pin4: + and the number 30
    pin3: K and the letter S
    pin2: - and the number 31
    pin1: + and the number 15

Does anybody know where the pins stand for. Of course I know the difference between + and -, but this unit has 2 different +pins?

Do the numbers point towards different fuses?

Bram, I hope this is of some help to you.

Pin 1 goes to pin 1 of of the white 3 pin connector T3af via a red/black wire and then on to connection 15a in the dash panel wiring loom which has is fuse protected at 15A (S15).

Pin 2 goes to an earth earth behind the dash via a brown wire of course.

Pin 3 is not used you will be pleased to learn.

Pin 4 connects to a 20A fuse and then to pin 3 of the white 3 pin connector T3af on the positive connection (30) in the dash panel wiring loom.

Pin 5 goes to pin 2 of the green connector T2ao behind the left hand dash panel via a black/white wire which in turn goes the speed signal of the speedometer via G21 (via connector T26a, pin 18). NOTE :This is relevant for model year 1992 onwards)

Pin 5 goes to pin 2 of the white connector T3af via a white/black wire which in turn goes the speed signal of the speedometer via G21 (via connector T26a, pin 18). NOTE :This is relevant for model year 1994 onwards)

Connector T2ao and T3af are described as two pin connector when each wiring diagram shows three pins used in each case.

Credit to Paul for the schematics.

        Thanks Nuvo,

But your text refers to a 5 pins connector and a speedometer?????

I am not sure how easy it is to assume these color-codings are the same for my sunroof motor-unit? Are they on the same fuse?

Maybe somebody has an electrical schematic how this could work........

Bram, I've just noticed that the preselect sunroof motor I have has pin 5 missing from the controller (I couldn't tell from your picture without some basic image manipulation).

So It's fair to say that pin 5 is not used either in this case, strange that it is wired for it though.

The control unit has 2 fuses S83 (20A) and S12 (15A). I'll try and post a schematic for you if I can find a prescanned version of the drawings I have.

UPDATE: You can try here for reference.

Not sure if the above link worked, so I've attached the relevant files for MY 94 for you.

              Great! This is really helpfull.

If I read this schematic correctly it seems I am missing 1 fused +pole in the roof cabinet, and I do not know which one (nr. 30 or 15?).

Could I try to combine pin 1 and 4 of the new motor unit and put them on the same +pole coming from the fuse box? Or maybe with a fuse in between these 2 +poles?

I think this could work, since that in the past the original sunroof motor and control unit were also using just 1 +pole coming from the fuse box.

              Thanks again!

You will need to cross reference the schematic for the original slide roof control to find what you are looking for. Link here.

You may need to look to the schematics for the electric windows circuits to find what you are looking for as this shows the control unit (J139) for electric windows and sunroof combined. It uses a 20A thermal fuse (S43) which you can use for the function of (S83).

I will post back with info on S12 as and when I find it.
UPDATE: Okay, the schematic for the sliding sunroof shows that the 15 (powered when ignition switch is on) is not used and instead the load reduction circuit X is used and is not fused. Therefore, it you move the red/black wire from X (M75s) to 15 (C15a) on the relay board you should now have a 12v feed protected with the 15A fuse (S12).

Fuse S83 is a thermal fuse, while S12 is a regular blade type fuse so there is no way that you could have one peform the function of the other.

Based on the fact that S83 is a thermal fuse I would strongly discourage you from attempting the above.

Thanks again. I will take your advise on the fuses thing
Still I think I do not need to connect both +poles. I heard from somebody that there are 2 +poles (pin 1 and 4) from which one of them is used in the comfort window closing system.

Keep you updated if it all works or when not.

                  cheers

Hmm. You could probably omit the connection via the switched feed (pin 1) and that would work in a similar way to the current slide control but I would wire it as per the diagram myself.

I'd be very interested to hear how you get on as this was something I was planning on doing myself during the warmer weather. Good luck

Finally had some time to work on the sunroof rotary wheel upgrade today.

First I had to make new wires that go from the original power connector to:

                      2x plus pole
                      1x minus pole

O yes, all cables are red, but I indicated with red and blue connectors the plus and minus

The 2 red cables are combined into the plus pole coming from the wire loom with a fuse of 15A
