I'm an MOT tester and all we check for is the correct aim, beam pattern and if they are bright enough- it's a bonus if the lights work too, as most people come in with bulbs blown or they changed it themselves and fitted it incorrectly and it's pointing skywards!!
I wouldn't fail a car for having better lights!!!!

OK. I'm going to get an HID kit for my 1994 Elipsoid headlamps. There seem to be lots of choices to make when buying a kit. Can someone tell me which bulbs I need? H4, H1, H7? What do I need? As there are two bulbs (one for dipped and one for main beam) do I need two sets of bulbs and ballasts?

Help here gratefully received as I just don't have time to go and have a look what bulbs are in my car already. They are the standard item at the moment. An idiots' guide would be much appreciated.

I've had a kit fitted for ages now and no problems at all. think I've only been flashed once!

However, would this help it the quest to make it completely legal?

I emailed them about fit and this was the reply:

updated: Autocheck has now come on! Pin mod has sorted it with zero drama. Does seem to be a random thing autocheck and HID installs!

newer hid kits have no problem with autocheck, cause they have built in resistor to make believe that the car is still running correct wattage bulbs

Here is the latest version of the MOT testers manual:

It says nothing about checking the output of the lights, all that can be given is an advisory notice as the headlamp bulb type is not a testable item.
If you are failed for having HIDs ask to see where it says in the testers manual!!!!

£18???? Thats the lowest I've heard of by far!! Where was this?

I'm sure they can't be up to much, you can pay more than that for a pair of normal halogen bulbs!

I just bought an H4 kit for my 3B headlamps, the beam changes from head to dip by a solenoid moving the bulb back and forth
