If I was you best idea would be to take the good battery off another spare car and put that on, it will work best and give best results.

that's the plan mate. I'll pull the big heavy duty bneastie out of the black 80 I bought and use that. If i'm still just getting the click i'll get ye old club hammer out.

how bizarre. took down a fresh battery this morning, turned the key and it turned over for a couple of seconds. My phone rang though so I answered it and when I tried again the starter just went click. tried thumping it a bit but no joy. I can't even figure out how to reach in to get that bell housing bolt off that holds the starter in from the rear. agh!

How did it turn over? Fast or slow? Wondering if you have the engine ground strap connected. Anything smell like its getting hot? You say fresh battery but is it the same one that you've charged up? It may just be knackered. Remind me, this engine was running fine right? Its the one you changed the dizzy on?

Is the click definitely coming from the starter Noel? Not just a click from a relay somewhere else? Just wondering. May be the ignition switch.

Is the big cable tight on the starter terminal? Disconnect the battery before you put a spanner on it to check though or you may end up doing some welding

Sounds like what mine did when the starter was playing up, it would work fine at times then at other times it would just click and do nothing more. Did you try start it a few times as thats what I did when it was on its way out and it did work a few times till when my dizzy gear went and I changed that and it gave out so had to change it in the end.

That once that it turned over it did so fast enough. not slow like the battery was dead. It was a different battery too cos I think the other one has seen the end. not brand new but out of another car and fully charged overnight. tested it with the multimeter and it's holding the charge ok.
I had wondered about the earth strap too so I took it off where I had attached it (under the airbox ish) and cleaned it up before putting it back.
Live is the next step. I'll check that it's definitely on properly. Hope it's just that simple. And cheers for the tip - i'm usually savvy enough not to fry myself but when I get frustrated there's always the possibility that I could be stupid.
I'm pretty sure it's the starter clicking by the way. quite a loud, hollow click sound. When I turn the key the dash lights come on, I get a single beep to say I haven't got fluid and lights and everything, then as I turn fully I get the big hollow click and a rapid click click click click from the passenger side of the engine bay. I've just been there myself so I can't tell what it's coming from but it could be normal. It's just that there should be the sound of an engine running to drown it out.
And yeah - it was running well before the transfer. Same car I had the dizzy probs with but there's a new dizzy in there now with metal gear.

Peter - I'm really hoping I don't have to change it. How the hell did you get in to that bolt coming through from behind?

cheers lads. Really appreciate the thoughts
                    Noel

IIRC you can go at it two ways either from the top down with a ratchet or from underneath with a ratchet again, its a pita but possible, I did mine from underneath when I changed it.

well I took a thin wire brush to everything in sight, tightened it all up again and whaddaya know.. it bloody worked. not only that but the friggin car started!!! It's alive!!! woohoo! Now to be fair it's running like a bag of pig **** but the fact that it's running at all makes me a happy bunny indeed.
Thanks for the help lads. I'm off to update my project thread.

That's what I thought mate. But why would I need a new one if it's starting ok now? Or is it just a cross over in posts most likely? well, anyway it's starting now so i'm happy. see... i'll even do one of these
