main beam switches lights off!! HELP

tonight i had my a100 quattro out for the first time at night, and to my shock, when i went for full beam, the headlights went off!!

the sidelights remain on but no full beam or dip, so, could anyone shine any light (sorry about the very bad pun) on this,

    any help, gratefully appreciated.

Yes check all relays and fuses but if turning mains on, turns off the dips then I'd be suspicious of a wiring fault or something wrong with the main/dip stalk.

As above i would suspect - if H4 lamps:

          Fuse
          Relay
          Lamps themselves

If they are not H4 (ie the type that has main and dip in the same lamp ( i dont like the word 'bulb' as that is what you plant in the garden) then I would suspect wiring.

It is most likely a fuse i'd assume as when you switch to main beam on an H4 setup, it cuts out the dip intentionally and uses the other filiment.

Thats a good point on H4's actually - I was thinking it was a pair of H1s

On H4 the dip filament is turned off when main-beam is selected so if that relay or fuse is at fault then you get neither filament generating any light. Should be easy to find and fix in this case.

i don't like using the word bulb either
              as i'm electrician
but using the word lamp some people think
thats what sits on a bedside table

right chaps, i got round to checking things with the lights this afternoon, and i checked the bulbs in my other car and they're fine,
i then checked the fuses and they're fine too, and accorsing to the fuse box diagram, there is no relay for the main beam, so is there a relay for them somewhere else?
and if not, i will presume the fault lyes in either the stalk or the wiring??

again, any help is much appreciated
