I stumbled on this today whilst removing old audio wiring and a handsfree kit.
my guess is a bodge to overide the immobiliser? can anyone explain this?
Looks like the lock barrel has been cut off at some point.

Seeing as a lock barrel with reader coil for the immo is just over twice the price of an earlier one without, not to mention having pay to get new barrel coded to old key, I'd say that's a spot on guess.
Old barrel broke and they installed earlier non immo version. The key only has to be close to the barrel for it to deactivate the immo, so they tied them together and shoved them out of the way.
Have a look at your current key, bet it doesn't have the tiny glass "pellet" inside it.
Never under estimate the ingenuity of a tight arsé

that probably was done to defeat the immo i would say. i think the key and cluster need to go together....
Deffo done to beat immo, but the cluster isn't matched to the key on any S2/RS2
