    Explain this???

I stumbled on this today whilst removing old audio wiring and a handsfree kit.
my guess is a bodge to overide the immobiliser? can anyone explain this?

Looks like the lock barrel has been cut off at some point.

it looks to me like someone changed the cluster at some point?

that probably was done to defeat the immo i would say. i think the key and cluster need to go together....

Seeing as a lock barrel with reader coil for the immo is just over twice the price of an earlier one without, not to mention having pay to get new barrel coded to old key, I'd say that's a spot on guess.
Old barrel broke and they installed earlier non immo version. The key only has to be close to the barrel for it to deactivate the immo, so they tied them together and shoved them out of the way.
Have a look at your current key, bet it doesn't have the tiny glass "pellet" inside it.

Never under estimate the ingenuity of a tight arsé

Deffo done to beat immo, but the cluster isn't matched to the key on any S2/RS2

        Oh that is pure genius.

I think we need a 'bodge of the week' board as that would get my vote for this weeks entry

No only to the ecu, your thinking of the later 1.8T cars which have that.

I have a bad feeling this is only the beginnig there is lots of pvc tape round various parts of the loom and ive discovered some really bad soldering in places, i think its time for some continuity testing can anyone point me in the direction of the aby schematics? i have the rs2 ones but im assuming they are diffrent.
To add to the saga the key i have only fits the doors and the ignition it wont open the boot.

Try s2central for the schematics, should be on there.

Also was this the car jay got from the scammers down in swindon, if so not surprised

Heard of a few people that have bought cars from them and found all sorts of problems

It was a dog! mind you the kingfisher is not short of problems! ive had to re underseal all the arches the fuel lines are shot, there was quite a lot of rust in the engine bay which is now sorted, i think i need to update my project thread ive been pretty busy tidying the cosmetics lately the interior is nearly complete black headlining, leather and carbon nice!

                              Excellent idea!!!!

I have seen some classic bodges in my time, A chain welded between the engine mount and body shell is one that springs to mind

When a new mount was £15!!!!!!!!!

Will have to start taking a camera in to work to take pics of some of the great MOT bodges i see every day!!!!!
