Intermittent Front Wiper Control from a late Cabrio ?

I know one can replace the standard front wiper relay for a Duduco programable intermittent front wiper relay, but on the later model B4 Cabrio, ( 99 V6 ABC ), they have a wiper stalk that incorporates a 4 / 5 position little switch that alters the delay on the frequency of the operation of the front wipers in the intermittent position.

What I was wondering was that if I fitted such a wiper stalk, would I then have this facility on my 95 Avant or is there more to it than than ?

While the programmable relay is very simple to instal and easy enough to use, the little switch on the stalk is even easier to use, but will be harder to install.

But just in case you have not got a Dudoco relay installed, I'd recommend them as a minimum.

I also need to get a couple of those "comfort" indicator relays that were mentioned a while ago as part of a group buy, maybe somebody could post a link to the thread on this thread for convenience ?. If anyone bought and fitted such a relay to their Avant, how did they get on / find it in operation ?

Hope the above is of interest.

    Thanks either way.

    Hi!

I reckon that the first problem (not considering the loom and electric stuff) you'll find if you go to put that stalk in your avant it's the fact that you miss the rear wiper control..... Cabrio does'nt have it.

I always thought this was done with just a relay....of a corrado.

        Hmmm interesting.

I think the 99 cabrio wiper stalk will almost certainly have a different connector compared with earlier models. I'll bet that it shares the same as an A4 of the same year.

You could possibly swap the bases of between the stalks, i.e., fit the cabrio stalk to the base of the coupe/avant. You would also need to swap the part on the stalk that allows you to push it forward to active the rear wiper/washer.

Then once you've gone to the trouble of doing that you would need to compare the wiring between the two and modify that too. You would probably need to source the corresponding relay and carrier too from an A4 avant.

If anyone can post up a schematic for a cabrio of this vintage I wouln't mind taking look to see if this feasible.
On face value it looks like reasonable amount of work for a small albeit nice update.

I have thought of this before... pretty sure Ben told me the B5 style stalks don't work into B3/B4 housings. Think its possible with a fair bit of fiddly mods and you'd need to start with the wiper stalk from a B5 Avant to keep the rear wiper control - which was my original desire as I hate the flappy push for ON, push for OFF on the Coupe.

I'm reasonably sure that stalk is the same design, the base and plug into the dash loom is different, you'd need to dismantle it and swap the B5 stalk and wire the switch to the B3/B4 base plug.

I've been meaning to source a cheap used one to have a closer look.

              Thanks for your

              thoughts to date.

Maybe a job for Jas11n, once he's got those S8s fitted.

Here's another one to mull over, maybe it should be on a separate thread but anyway it is slightly related and I presume I can't hijack my own thread ?

If one wanted to fit an MFA set of clocks and an MFA stalk to a 99 Cabrio, would that give one an active / fully working MFA on a non MFA car ?

Apologies if this has already been covered on a separate thread relating to an S2 ?

              Thanks again.

I managed to source the schematics. The only major differnce is that the >96 models use two relays for the intermittent wash wipe and headlight wash. From 97> these functions are combined into a double relay.

This means that the wiring from these two relays would need to be relocated to an empty carrier in the auxiliary relay plate.

If I had the bits to hand I would have a go at a temporarily wiring this as a POC.

I have put in a relay from a Pasat iirc, with the programmable intervall when on intermittent. much better than the funny little pos switch that is on the newer cars (I have it on my A6, so I can compare) just swap the relais and done

I´m halfway through this modification on my 94 s2 saloon. I have a B5 avant -99 stalk mounted, it fits also to the older thinner steering column if you use the adapter as per RS2-steeringwheel conversion. The connectors on the stalk are all different for the B5 although it is possible to rewire it with B5 connectors so it will work, I have gotten the doublerelay for the B5 but i am missing the wiring schematics for this so i havent gone through with the relay repositioning to the aux carrier yet.

Does anyone have the schematics for intermitent wiper in the s2 AND B5 A4?

Fair p;ay to you, watching with interest, although I think it will be beyond me, but must have a look at say a 97 A4 Avant with an MFA, assuming it has the time front wiper interval switch on the stalk.

btw, it snowed here a bit last night and even though it's only an inch "deep", the S2 was still the car to have early this morning.

                      Kind regards.
