    Hacking Auto-check LCD

Decided this was better off in its own thread. I know it took me forever to find this info and what I did find was bitty....

Ii there a possibility to use this interface as a shiftlight, gear indicator, G-meter, EGT/IAT etc?

Could you share more details on the bridge? Like schematics on how to build it or where to buy it.

PC input would be next step if I finally get so far, that I could figure out what and how exactly to install into the car
This means me dragging out all the source code and bits and bobs again. Given what a PITA it was to do I really should do it and maybe give it to S2Central

Schematics wont help you a lot TBH as that board has a shedload of other stuff on it.

You need to pick up (at the cluster, beleive its the YELLOW connector):
T14/8 - Enable, pulled high (+5) to take control of the display. Autocheck will override your display though.
T14/3 - Clock (+5) to clock in data
    T14/4 - Data (+5) for display data

IIRC you need to send a whole display worth of data.#, 8 bits per character to start redrawing at the top again or drop 'enable' and start over. It takes 8 Bit ASCII and my code is a bit cludgy as it was made to work and never finessed. It may be possible to send control codes to do things but I've never had the luxury of having a dash not in a car to play with Timings were worked out by starting with fast clocks and comming down till it worked, then adding a wide error margin. That display is not fast at all. I have a PIC18F4550 (I think) doing it as it does a lot more but one of the simple, cheaper pics should be able to do it. PIC16F628a may be a good choice as its cheap and has a fast serial port and onboard oscillator. All you have to do in theory is take the RS232 data and squirt it out as serial, so an ISR for the USART is probobly all you need write. Of course that leaves a few analog/digital inputs to play with.

Ive long suspected a nicer way might be to break into the ribbon to the Autocheck LCD, then watch whats going on. Its an of fthe shelf LCD controller and so its not that hard to get info on and the ribbon is between that controller and the dash micro. Drive it yourself and do everything you want (lots of pretty GFX then) and let go when you see the micro on the dash select the display. You could if you felt brave/mad/both drop an old digi cam 1" colour tft in there and really muck about then. The final option is to map out the pins on the micro and simply rip it out and drop a new one in there, not that silly an idea as the tricky interfacing has been done by audi.

If someone donates a dash or if I find one on fleabay I will hapilly document things. The Audi connectors used on the dash are compatiable with standard IDC ribbon connectors/ BERG .250 headers if you need to break into them. Ive done this the other way round before and used Audi connectors to connect to VFD units.

Are there any other signals that people might like to pick up for their car PC? I pick up the illumination line to dim the TFT down as well as the tacho signals for speedo and tacho here. its possible to set a timer and count the pulses on these lines and you can let the PC work out what the real speed is based on that.

the Boost instruments one is where the wiring info came from originally, Theres another site somewhere that describes the protocol too. I've shot the guy at boost instruments an email just in case I cant find my paperwork (my big blue notepad full of scrawl) with the signalling levels, timings etc on.

I mailed the Boost Instruments guy a few months ago. He doesn't make them anymore but has a couple of older units left in stock (but they won't interface with other inputs iirc)

All I'm proposing (and have drawn up) is a straight, stick serial in from a pc and display it on autocheck. I might have the ability to put a startup message on although not sure how much use this is, the brake check will always be on at startup which will override the message.

One thing I could do with knowing is how common are S2s with Radio Gamma. Allowing for this to work with one fitted means a bit of faffing about allowing passthru. If its uncommon I'll just put a switch in and forget passthru.

I think you have a huge potential audience for this sort of thing!!
All the electronic jargon is way above my head, but is something Id love to see expanded upon, and Im sure alot of other people on here will feel the same

              Thanks Dest.

So what sort of things are people after seeing on that display?

                Thanks for your topic. Cheers

Do I understand correctly, that the [T14/4 - Data (+5) for display data] input in the cluster accepts ASCII and from there the Cluster itself translates how it would be displayed on the LCD?

For self education purposes I would not mind building my own system or finishing it from DIY guide. but i would need a lot of reading and self training for building it on my own It would really help to get as much currently known information as possible, Posting it onto S2 Central seems like a good idea.

TDS-1 is a good module, but as ive heard it's production has ended and I have given up hopes for getting hold of one.

I have a spare Audi 90 Cluster avaliable for testing but I dont have the right knowledge (or tools probably) to wire it up as testbed. I would be happy to give it to you, but I'm afraid that the transport would cost more than reasonable.

About Radio Gamma, Most users i know have ditched the original Headunit for a newer one, so the passtrough would not be an issue. Maybe hooking up a simple switch to change the information from radio to pc and back would be easyest compromise.
Also i have noticed tht most stock stereos that came with Urs6/C4 A6 don't use the older protocol so autocheck input stays unused.

Edit: I would use the display firstly instead of the A pilar gauges, EGT/IAT, AFR etc. Also for addon equipment like parking sensors, G-meter etc, could display their info on the screan instead of another ugly 3rd party display unit.

                  Boost
                  EGT
                  Air charge temp

Im sure there are loads of others.
If something similar to SECS as fitted to Cosworths could be built it would be awesome!!
(Its basically something along the lines of vagcom but not as complex, gives readouts of water temp, boost, EGT, ACT, and loads of other things)

Have you looked at an urs4 unit as they can display boost?

What would I want-shift light, boost, charge temp-could be compared to ambient.

Plumb in a hidden push button that cycles through the following displays: -

Display 1. Boost and EGT with both a current reading and highest reading
(prolly easier to display highest since ignition rather than faffing around with a reset button)

Display 2. Air intake temps (as measured by the ECU)

Display 3. Oil and water temps - current and highest (good for track use)

Display 4. Current and highest speed as measured by the ECU (good for track sessions and sprints)

Display 5. "SHIFT" (this would need some kind of user config capability to set it to the desired level)

I could keep going but that would do me for day 1 - when can I get it?

                        Cheers n

IIRC on the German Meckis forum there is already someone who made a one-off S2 OSD featuring all this data.
I asked the man 2 years ago if he would be willing to mass-produce this or at least share the info, but he did not want to do it.

I can not find the link with pictures of it it anymore though......

Aiden on here had a small display on the side of the rear view mirror with boost and other live data on his s4, he also posted links to the unit to buy the display etc on another forum. Maybe that could be expanded upon
