  • Definitive Relay Listing for S2 & RS2

Please see attached for a decent attempt at capturing S2/RS2 specific information about relay positions, purposes and part numbers. Reason for this is there is loads of confusion throughout the factory diagrams (I have them all for B3/B4) as they attempt to generalise everything for most vehicles. Some of you will have already noticed the stickers on the fusebox lid is pretty bad on the S2.

I collected much of this data myself and have validated only on a couple of cars so far. Saltinot also helped with a listing of all sorts of relay modules he found on a German forum - nothing S2 specific.

I've attached two versions and would appreciate if others can help confirm this is correct or shed any light on a few question mark items.

Few points of particular note -

1 - if you have a 1991 3B Coupe then ignore this as much of it is different and I will deal with it separately.

2 - all the manuals show use of relay position 2 in the main fusebox for some part of radiator fan circuit but this is NOT the case for S2/RS2. It appears many cars (my own included) have a relay equipped there but it is essentially just a spare relay. Loads of other engines used this position for fan relay and my bet is that the factory documentation just made all cars equipped with it regardless.

3 - particularly looking part numbers for daylight running relay and solar roof control.

PLEASE post any findings - good or bad in this thread so I can complete the list and archive it onto S2central.net for posterity as well.

    Thanks in advance !

Plot thickens on that fuel gauge damper... my sad/broken old MY92 80V6Q has such a relay fitted in FAB#9 - even though the factory sticker on the panel states that it should be #7 for LHD (matches Stefano) and #13 for RHD. The latter is actually mentioned in the small print of RHD schematics I have for 1992 and presumably 1993. I cannot find an official date when this was phased out for UK/RHD. Another little mystery.

Nice little guide. Can you tell me what is the function of the fuel gauge damper relay? The name is giving much away, well to me at least.

AFAIK it just damps the signal coming from the fuel level sender in the tank... seeing as we quattro boys & girls are driving slowly sideways all the time - we wouldn't want to be distracted by a fuel guage wobbling up and down all the time.

Paul - Just on note from me - If it helps...

Front wiper relay - Std can be 19 or 229 (19 maybe off a 3b or other 80/90 models Don't know what the differance is - as ETKA list's just about the same models for both relays....)

Programmable one is a No 99 AFAIK

              Nice Guide

You cant trust ETKA so much on this stuff, not on its own anyway - LOL. If you can post a part number for that one numbered 19 would be good - got a feeling it is a right old one.

You could be correct... As It's the same as fitted to my MK2 Golf...

No 19 Vag part No; 191955531

No 99 Vag Part No; 357-955-531 Or 3B0-955-531

I've already got the 3B0 number... its gonna get real complicated if I try to capture these VW numbered variants though.

Just checked a little further into this and the No 197 relay is the 3B0-955-531 which has now been superseded by the No 99 Relay...

OK then - bit of a sore head now as Audi did their best to confuse me with relay schematic numbers changing around as well as positions in the early years.

Attached spreadsheet now covers the following groups of compatible lineups...

                        MY91 - 3B Coupe only
                        MY92 / 93 - 3B Coupe only
Everything else from Oct'92 (MY93) onwards for ABY & ADU

I would REALLY be happy if the 3B owners would verify the theory here - whether thats LHD or RHD.

Don't just thank me - help me see if its correct... All I have had to physically check on cars is my 94 Coupe. The list isn't definitive until its proven to be right and not just my view of the world based on some ropey ~20yr old schematics and a few grainy photos.
