    Fuel Gauge not working!

My fuel gauge is stuck right over to the left, no signal, just put £60 quid in too. Temp gauge is working fine so it's not the voltage reg..

Trip computer is also saying "E" for Empty and the petrol pump symbol is up!

Any pointers where to look for the lost signal? Have to add that I left the cover off the fuse box so there's some water in the car!

Wire to variable resistance, in the tank has broken off due to the way the wire always bends over a small area as the float moves up and down.

Managed to shorten the wire and give it a more gentle curve. Worked fine, but that was on a URS4.

Agree the tank sender is the place to look as that's where the signal for the gauge and the empty light come from.

Looks like the sender is faulty and my bet would be the float has fallen off/flooded, the arm fallen down so the gauge is reading empty.

mine suffers with the gauge reading half way when its either 100% full or way down in the red, im guessing this is sender related too.

            Cheers for the replies guys!

So how can I check that? Can I just unplug at the tank and short out the plug to make the gauge read full? Is it under the boot carpet?

It's working again! I ran the car up to temp today and let the fan cycle a few times with the heater on full blast and windows open to try and dry things out, there was condensation inside the speedo cluster! left the windows open for a while till it got cold out. Went out tonight to pick my lad up and the gauge is now working and fuel range is 230miles

I'm really pissed off with myself for leaving the top of the fuse box open, duh!

I have a crazy fuel gauge on my C4 Ael: it works fine from full to a little less than half tank.
Then I hear a "tic" from the fuse box, the fuel lamp turns on and the needle marks total empty tank.

At about 1/4 of fuel tank it wakes up and work fine for a while, then again.

If I switch off the car , when back on it works for a while also, then... again

The car has no trip computer or autocheck.

Could it be the sliding contact on the arm of the float?
Is there any relay for this device?

Maybe the voltage regulator but on the S2 that affects the temp gauge too.

On S2 clocks the voltage reg is bolted to the back corner of the gauge cluster with a small bolt and washer, the bolt can come loose.

All the other gauges work fine, nuts tightening on the back of the gauges seems fine also.
The car has 290000 km and it seems a worn part. Juat wanna know if it's a common easy fault before pulling out the float.

                          813 971 959,i don't know the pin-out so i don't know how to test it.
I would like to ground it but dont know with which pin
