Anyone know why the code reader isnt being powered up by the obd ports? havent had chance to check power etc yet
OBD ports will be fed via the ECU. No power to ECU, no output to ports. I seem to remember I can hear a relay activating in my ECU when the key is turned on. Can you hear any life from it? This may save you fiddling around with multimeters or bulbs.

hi steve,im assuming the ecu is ok as this problem has been intermitent for a few days.
i think firstly check power to ecu as peeps have mentioned as im fairly sure its a problem in that area.
Before when i wiggled the ecu it would then start, then once started i would re wriggle and it would almost die...
fekin cars!!
p.s il check the fuel relay same time too,had no chance to check last night

When I did my pin swap the car wouldn't start afterwards. I took the connector off and all the pins looked ok. Stuck it back on and hey presto she fired up. Could be no more than a dodgy connector. I presume you've had the ECU off and clamped the connector back up a couple of times to make sure its seating properly?

Just got home and checked the relay,it clicks and closes as it should hold it closed you can hear fuel being pumped to injectors, can the relay now be ruled out ?
Andy: I am confused as to what you have checked and eliminated (you seem to be going in circles a bit).
I suggest going back to the beginning and and methodically going through the list in this solutions to a non-starting AAN post (applies equally well to ABYs and ADUs):
SOunds to me like a broken wire somewhere in the loom prior to the muliti plug to the ecu. You have said it looks like someone has been in there before. Take off the wrap and check the wires carefully and if in any doubt repair. the connectors used by VAG group have the shrink wrap built in. VAG charge about £2 each. Halfords sell them in a pack of 4 for about £1.50. Use these dont solder ( so i am told solder can increase the resistance ????)

hi dave, yes to be honest im frustrated as i seem to have no time to sort it out....i knew doing the relay would be a 2 second job, bless it,its trying to start even more now with fuel in the system,i even tried another relay that i managed to find tonight but to no avail.
I need time to sort it,but we all can vouch for being impatient in wanting them back on the road

this is what im worried about, trying to find the culprit, theres lots of them down there and access isnt exactly great! Although someones been there before it all looks ok with regards to the connectors etc,i was hopeing it was just a wire that had pulled out somewhere.
No power to the obd plugs, which as i understand comes from a feed from/via the ecu.
At least it will narrow it down a bit i guess
