    Central Locking Pump (ABY)

    Hi Guys,

I currently have an issue with the central locking on my '95 ABY Coupe that I hope someone can shed some light on.

After unlocking the car (which works fine), opening the drivers door will operate the central locking and hence locks the car with the doors open.

The car also locks when the key is taken out of the ignition when the drivers door is open. (It also locks when you push the ignition barrel in, again only when the door is open).

It's not alarm related, as that was fully disabled and it's still doing the same thing.

So far, the electrician I've spoken to says that it looks for all the world like the central locking pump's internal circuit board is faulty. He said that it's probably picking up an earth from the door courtesy light switch. and is therefore firing the central locking when the door is opened, which seemed to make sense.

Has anyone experienced this before? and does it sound like a plausible explanation of the fault?

    The pump p/n is 4A0 862 257 J
    I've found a s/h one on the bay to substitute (same p/n but from a '98 A6).

Also, does a replacement pump need coding to the vehicle? I've been told that it has to be, but wasn't the S2 pre such things?

Sorry if that's all a bit long-winded, but cheers for any help!

    Pete.

Pump is plug and play, no coding AFAIK.

I had faults with my pump/courtesy lights circuit, turned out it was the loom which had cracked and corroded beneath the carpet where it passes under the driver's right foot and goes into the plastic trunking. Worth a look, took me ages to find it (several years IIRC! )

      Thanks Newsh,

I hoped that non-coding was the case. I'll be sure to check out that wiring you mention too.

Well, the replacement pump has been fitted and I'm very happy to say everything seems to now work as it should!
        No coding needed either thankfully.

Now to take the lid off the old pump to see if anything is obviously amiss. I can hear something loose rattling around in there....

Do tell/show us what you find loose inside.

It seems to be some sort of rivet. Not immediately obvious where it's come from either, might have been in there from new and may have been shorting something out?
