    Alternator playing up?

OK checked belts, checked connections, output just under 14v, new alternator last year

Sometimes red light on dash and Voltmeter below 12v when starting up and randomly when driving.

    Ideas please

Where did you check the voltage? Battery? Or alternator?

Check to ensure field coils are getting 12v. (little wire).

Test would be to use a short wire to energize the field coils by shorting to main terminal while car is idling. The alternation will start charging, if this is the problem.

Tightened, it was a bit loose but nice and secure now. Light still came on a few times after I tightened the belt but has been OK for last few runs, fingers crossedl. I sprayed a bit of contact cleaner about when I checked the connections maybe that has done the trick.

it's completely dead now so on the bench, annoying as it got reconned couple a years ago and only done less thasn 10,000 miles

Running a 90 Amp S4 one as a stand in seems to be OK although pulley wheel is bigger
