Noticed as I was driving the other day that my speedo needle had dropped to zero, as I changed gear from 3rd to 4th it started working again, then dropped going back to 3rd. It did this a few times then stopped working altogether. So I suspect the wiring has been chafing or got pulled by the grear linkage. I haven't been able to get the car jacked up yet to have a look but am I correct that the sensor is on the UK driver's side and the wire to it runs down from just near the brake master cyl? Is it possible to gain access to the sensor without removing anything?

ABY sensor on the 6 speed box is on the passnager side and the wiring comes off the engine loom on the passanger side too.Noticed as I was driving the other day that my speedo needle had dropped to zero, as I changed gear from 3rd to 4th it started working again, then dropped going back to 3rd. The reverse light switch is on the drivers side of the gearbox

Yes, no need to go underneath, you can reach down to the speed sensor connector from the engine comparment.
I've had the same problem with the speedo needle dying twice now. Despite suspecting the sensor and connectors I was able to prove that all the connectors were fine and the problem was inside the instrument cluster.
There's four pins connecting the speedo unit to the instrument cluster circuit board and a short 4 way ribbon cable inside the speedo unit that I all cleaned/resoldered. I also resoldered all the joints I could on the speedo circuit board.
If any of the trip computer/rear diff controller/cruise control still work when the speedo needle falls to zero the speed sensor is still working

Thanks guys
Trip computer was getting no speed signal so I went looking, happily my battery is under the back seat and I was able to unplug the sensor connector from under the bonnet by reaching down on the passenger side
One of the wires was broken off just where it enters the crimp of the pin. I took a pin with a few inches of wire out of a spare bit of loom I salvaged from the dagdag and spliced it in.
All back together and awaiting a test drive, pretty sure it will be fine now.Comment
