Tail lights working only on sidelights?

Well it seems electrical gremlins are at work... for some odd reason when I have the column light switch in sidelight mode, the LH and RH tail lights work great, however when I put them in dipped or main beam the LH tail lights go off!

Any ideas? The lights were working perfectly, and I am not getting any voltage to the grey/black wire which I believe to be the tail lights, at least when in dipped mode.

I've seen on a schematic something to do with a lighting control unit? Where is this?

    Cheers,

    Pete.

OK, well found the tail light control unit, passenger side wing behind the carpet -not getting anything on the grey/black there at either input or output, grey/red is fine (RH side), so looks like the problem is further up stream.... I guess these wires run behind the 'door' panels in the rear of the car?

        Yes, it is the stalk

        *smacks head*

Contact cleaner has sorted it for the moment, only just replaced the other side!

Will replace if not too dear.

Crikey mate, repairing and posting and sorting in just over an hour, well done.
Anyway, yep your switchgear/stalk is the problem as you have found, I had the exact same trouble on my '89 Audi 90 last year, used item cleaned up and fitted, jobs a good 'un

            Cheers buddy

I did have a bit of a gloomy moment thinking I had snagged a wire when I replaced the rear speakers the other day.... fortunately not

Think I will buy a Febi one, the other side was only £35 I think, and at least they will both look new then, rather than one new one old...
