I would say that there is a possibilty that that 7A ECU is modified because of a) the 98 RON sticker and b) the hand written red pen note on the box, indicating, to me, that the ECU was sent away to some one who was modding various ECUs and needed to make sure that one went back to its 7A owner.
BTW dropbox sucks for bringing photos to this forum.
Not really. I picked up a chip for mine many years ago and the only real difference was a little more torque between 2-4000rpms, it basically ironed out that flat spot ~3k.

Yup, exactly, the timing increase was likely in the low range, and reports only gave a moderate torque increase as opposed to all out power. Around 7BHP IIRC was the quoted figure, btu better drivabilty. You wouldn't notice it after a month I would say.
You are better off working on the intake side of things, throttle body, airbox, MAF etc, which are all restrictive/flow poorly. That and if you have the later cast exhaust manifold, swap it for the earlier bunch of bananas, this was 7-10BHP also IIRC, but more at top end.
thanks gents. kind of confirms what I thought about chipping/remapping anything without a turbo. When I finally get my car home no doubt I'll spend a lot of time wishing it was my S2 and then wondering whether I should just enjoy it or do something silly like keep an eye out for an 034 kit

I had TAP1 chip (15 HP according to their site) in my 91 CQ 20V 7A, with big MAF (? HP) , and bosch injectors (5HP) and tubular header (5-6HP)
The car was night and day compare to a stock one.
I have different injectors and chip......switchable back to standard.
Difference noticeable when driving, haven't had it on a rolling road.
I'd be interested to hear more of what folk have done regards the air flow sensor and throttle body.
john, what chip did you get and where from? and what injectors did you get?
looks like it might be worth a bit of tinkering to squeeze a little more power (famous last words)
