I've got the 50W 4300K Chinese ones too, been in both the A6 and S2 for years and never had any problems with them, paid about £15 delivered

I have had 3 sets of ballasts. 1 lasted no time and another was so poorly made that you could see the electronic components inside if you twisted the case slightly by hand. It did consume enough current to mean it was 50 watt but the other 2 50 watt ballasts only draw enough to make them 30 to 40 watt and are slow and dimmer.

Search for 'DLT F3' on aliexpress or 'DLT F5' if you need 50w.

Not sure if they are the best on aliexpress, but my personal experience and that of the 'internet experts' is that they are very, very good compared to other crap i've owned through the years. If you choose to go for an other brand, at least make sure it's an AC (alternating current) type. This makes the electrodes in the bulb burn up evenly, so they'll last much longer.

Ballasts; DLT is the brand to go for. Certainly as good as OEM.
Bulbs; Many options there, but look for bulbs that have an anti UV coating in the glass, otherwise they'll screw up the reflective coating in the projector over time. Also make sure the glass tube is well supported in the socket for instance ceramic or stainless. 4300K or 5000K for oem appearence.

Currently i have 50w 4300k in the mains + 35w 4300k in the high beam reflectors. All through DLT fast-bright ballasts. Original projectors have been replaced with bi-xenons, so thats a total of 210w xenon on main beams.
I wont bother to change the inner highs to 50w also as the road signs will probably become too blinding.

The fogs are some good 35w 4300k chinese bulbs, powered through a rubbish set of ballasts that I bought a couple years ago here in holland WITH warranty. It doesnt say anything. Sometimes they dont even power up if the battery voltage is under 13v. Will change them for DLT's at some point.
Do these DLT fast bright ballasts start quick enough to make them practicle in the high beams then?

From cold to about 75% in 2,5 secs. Full power takes another 2 secs.
Boot up time reduces to less than half of that if you have used them recently and they're still hot.

Pity they can't make something like the oem mains on my A6. They are instantanious on main beam for flashing.

That car has a bi xenon projector; a solenoid changes the light aperture on high beams. It's only one bulb that stays on all the time.
