Where to source electrical connector pins?

Bit of a cry for help this, or is it a challenge for you to get your teeth into? :mischeif:

My VR6 has p!ssed coolant into the 42-pin Engine loom to Non-engine loom connector, resulting in corroded pins.

Now I'm more than happy to strip the connector down and clean / replace pins as neccesary, but where can I get hold of nice new versions of the little captive connectors that lurk inside?

They appear to be both 1mm and 2mm spade types, male and female (obviously). I have yet to release a pair and measure up, as soon as I get the chance I will.

One option is to try and find a similar connector at a breakers and try to reuse good pins from that, but I know it will be difficult to release them from the original wires without trashing them.

I've trawled the web, and the closest I've found are at www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.uk but these still look too big.

I've also visited a few Auto-Electrical 'specialists' in Leeds, but the best they can come up with is "Hmm, main dealer only, mate." "Hmm, wouldn't get involved in a job like that", and "Hmm, have you tried Maplin?".

Maplin don't appear to do anything like what I need.

So, as the best technical forum on the 'net , what are your suggestions?

    Thanks in advance

Any car electric shop should be able to provide you the pins.

Most common ones are AMP jurior timer (1 hook) and junior power timer (2 hooks) types.

There are two types of pin and two wire sizes in each half of the connector. You buy them as repair wires which are 300mm long with a connector each end. Makes it dead easy to repair as you can cut back to good wire in the loom without having to stretch it.

The Male pins are as follows:

        000 979 132 (A) 1.5mm pin with 1.0mm wire

        000 979 129 2.8mm pin with 1.0mm wire

        000 979 219 2.8mm pin with 2.5mm wire

The Female pins are as follows:

        000 979 131 (A) 1.5mm with 1.0mm wire

        000 979 133 (A) 2.8mm with 1.0mm wire

        000 979 225 (A) 2.8mm with 2.5mm wire

The A at the end of a number means you can get it with gold plated terminals.

        i.e 000 979 132 normal, 000 979 132 A gold plated.

They are all £0.90+VAT for the normal and £1.28+VAT for the gold plated ones from us main stealers

        HTH,

        Ben

@ Ben - fantastic, thanks for the detailed reply! As ever the forum proves it's worth! When you say they have a connector at each end, do you get male and female or two of the same type?
@ Porkkis - Great stuff, one of the hardest things is finding out the right name for a tiny part!. Top info
@ Gav - no pics at the mo, but I will be doing a how-to for the benefit of fellow VR6 owners (obviously not on this forum, but I will be giving you guys credit!). Why is he breaking it? Not the dreaded timing chain disintegration I hope!

They have the same connector each end. So two male or two female.

Nice one. While you're near the 'family album', how much are the 2 sides of the main connector body? I have a funny feeling mine may have suffered a bit from short circuits here and there...
(I'm assuming they are supplied without the pins).

I spend all day near 'the family album', goes with the job.

                  The connector halves are:

                  1H0 973 131 B @ £8.34+VAT (this is the half on the engine loom)

                  1H0 973 103 B @ £30.26+VAT (this is the half in the car)

                  They come empty.

Cheers, guru Ben. Bit of a price difference there Thankfully I think it's only the female side that's ropey.

Now I just need to source a pin removal tool, think there was a Snap-on set on Fleabay last time I looked...

I need to get myself a set of them too. If you find some cheap let me know

VAG do them but they are silly money. Skoda do a lovely set in a wooden case for about £60 but I can't find the part number for them anywhere.

I don't like original spare part pins as they come with a short wire and are already crimped and therefore soldering is almost a must. So I get them separately elsewhere. Sometimes I've purhcased 1 original one to have a sample.
