    Engine Wont Start, No Spark

    Been here before

Good run down the A4 nice roundabouits on a summer sunday afternoon

S2 dies and wont turn over - towed home and left to ponder the reasons for another day

    Symptoms,

    Engine turns
Fuel in the Fuel rail under pressure,
    No spark

    Been here before - Dissy?

Roter arm not turning when engine turned over (new dizzy only fitted a few months ago)

Removed the dissy (easy job as I still have my modded tools and the anti tamper plate is off)

Dissy looks in good order, however on inspecting inside the head where the dissy locates there is a splined cog that is completely detached itself from wherever it is supposed to be

    HELP

Need BTDT advice and help, I suspect it may not be a job I can tackle, but you never know.

    Thanks

    George

If that cog has come off the dizzy altogether then its fooked. It connects onto the inlet camshaft as that has splines on it to drive the dizzy.

Have you had the dizzy out to inspect it?

Dissy is out and looks fine, only a couple of months old.

Just to clarify, the dissy cog is fine,

If the dissy conects to the "inlet camshaft" then it is the "inlet camshaft" that is floating around loose in the head.

Was that cog loose in the engine then? Have you got it out?

I cant quite get a grip of it to retrive it ir it may just be slightly to big for the hole, did'nt want to force it anyway, god knows if there is any other damage in there.

There shouldn't be any significant damage in there. I've got a spare inlet camshaft that you can have if you need it. I also need to change the dizzy gear on mine and change the cams to 7A

                Cheers,

I would be greatful for the camshaft PM me and let me know what you want for it.

The bigger question is how much work is involved in changing the cam, and have I got the tools to do it ???

I would recommend checking the timing belt. You'll need to retime the engine anyway at the front.

If you're changing the cam, you should change the belt anyway along with water pump and idler roller. Also check the camshaft oil seal for leaks.

                          OK

Part arrived and replacement CAM thanks to Chris

Starting to remove the rocker cover and cant seem to get access to the last bolt located under the throttle body

I have read both articals posted on the forum

                          http://www.s2-audi.co.uk/tech_artic...over_gasket.htm and http://www.vagparts.com/s2/D3/rad3.htm page 3

but mine seems to be located slightly tighter to the throttle body

I have removed the 4 bolts holding ther TB in place but it does not seem to want to come free from the IM and at this stage I dont want to force it

                          Any suggestions welcome

You need to remove the TB. The old gasket has "glued" it on so you have to use a bit force. Don't worry.

If the cam chain is loose enough you can raise only 1 cam out. Otherwise you have to take both out at the same time. Lose - lose situation as if the chain is that loose, you'd better replace it. It's fairly cheap.

First turn the engine to the timing mark at the flywheel. Now the cam chain gear dots should point to each other.

                            Fit new gaskets.

BTW never heard of a loose cam dizzy gear before...

Oh and be careful when loosening and tightening the cams. One cracked cam cap (or what ever they're called) and you need to replace the head.

                              Tighten to 15Nm.

Right procedure is to loosen them a bit one by one and not taking one out fully. This means the valve sping forces are distributed at all times!
