So far I have checked all fuses- ok

    Pull fault codes !

I'd go for the crank and cam sensors first though...

check the two senders on the side of the gearbox housing, if these arent giving the right signal you have no chance.

I changed mine when was trying to do some diagnosis and they werent the problem.

If they are give me a pm and you can have my old ones cheap, btw both are in good working order but left the new ones in after i had eliminated that possibility.

Thanx guys, how do i check these sensors? Also is it normal for them just to fail intantly like this? I had suspected something like a cable connection come loose or similar?

I've had one of the cam sensors go before on the car - but it was intermitant and got worse over a couple of weeks - car usually wouldn't start after filling up at the petrol station.

Can you get over to Dunfermline - you can take vag-com away for a play if you want?

Or get the LED blink tester out.

Think there is a simple resistance test on each of the sensors (G4, G20 & G40) which can establish if it is dead, but the only way to be sure is with an oscilloscope. Of course - the fault codes will help a LOT as they will pin point the offender.

                thanx paul

Hi Paul, thanx for the info, however I have managed to get her going today! (also thanx to you!) I used the ecu pin out info from your S2 central site & found there was no power to pin 18. I then rechecked the fuse which still looked ok but when I tested it , it was open circuit!
I remembered actually some years back I saw this probem with a blade type fuse. They appear to be made by crimping the actual fusible link to the 2 blades & if corrosion occurs at the joint....... problems! Might be worth mentioning this on S2 central if anyone is getting strange electical faults.
It may even be worthwhile changing all the fuses every so often?
just off for a blast to Glasgow now!
                cheers,
                simon

Simon, you saying about the fuses amde me think of some I used to have at my old dealership. They were from Wurth UK and when the blew, packed up etc, they LIT UP and glowed!! how neat is that

Oh, Rep is due round the workshop next week, will have to ask the bloke about these. Knowing Wurth products they are bound to be expensive

Interesting about the fuses, I'm going to check all mine with a meter, presumably corrosion will show up as a resistance?

Yeah Martin, how about a group purchase on mugs?

Rep came in. They are about £3 per 10 fuses! Good idea but unless a car is prone to blowing fuses then whats the point?

Hi Tom, dont think any car is prone to bowing fuses without another problem, but if you read my 1st post it sure would have saved me a days grief!
Probably never happen again but I might consider them!
