it sounds very much like a thermostat. put your thermostat in a pan and boil the water if it starts to open its working if it dosen't its fooooked .it also could be the head gasket pressurising the water system (leaking into the water jacket ) had that problem on my quattro few years ago .

Why should it be mounted with the arrow up?

Overheating problem are such a c**t to fix i had the same problem with my S4 and after a power of money i sorted it to level i am happy with,I ended up putting on a new water pump changing the fan switch to a lower temp 87c ,Thermostat,Thermost casing,Timimng belt at the same time,POS was giving me this flat spot at about 1500rpm so changed that as well(if engine is not running right this will cause it to run at higher temp because it has to work harder to get to speed) ,Two visits to Audi Camerons for big whopping bill all in all it cost me the best part of £900 to fix, the car still sits high sometimes in the summer but i put this down to the engine set up,the higher peformance the engine has the quicker it will heat up and the longer it will take to cool down

        Good Luck with your task
