I did my coil packs last week and couldn't find the correct sized thermal resistant tubing to fit under the coil pack cover that wasn't too bulky. My existing tubing wasnt too bad so I reused it. In hindsight I should have probably wrapped the wires in a heat resistant tape instead.

Having said that this stuff might work. I missed it when i did a search last week:

As a BTDT: having established which wires come from which coilpacks and numbering them, I cut and rejoined one wire at a time so as not to confuse myself and rewire the wrong wires. I ended up using heat shrink cable splicers with an additional heat shrink cover over the top as my soldering skills are rubbish.

if you do it this way rather than soldering the wires together or rewiring the connectors, it is worth staggering the joints on each individual coilpack wire as it will be tricky to feed your new cables with the new bulky joints all at the same point, through the existing thermal tubing sleeve. The same might be true even if you solder them and use heatshrink to cover the joints. I ended up getting some stuff called Thermo Sleeve which comes in different diameters and allowed me to slide the joints easily through without putting a strain on them.

The new coilpacks have really sharpened up the engine, it feels like the car to reacts to the throttle pedal much quicker now.

ps It might be worth checking the power output stages (POS) (aka: power amplifier) are working. See my BTDT on this, which could have saved me 5 new coilpacks!

wow greate post!!! Im going to attemp to solder them although my skills arnt up to scratch.

Is there anywhere else to get the tubing from apart from demon tweaks?
Also, Im leaving this late but after reading your post I think i will replace the other amplifier as I didnt replace both (although replacing 1 made the engine a LOT better).

only audi who sell these amp's? (no time waiting for delivery)

You might find a cheaper supplier but Deamon tweeks do do a next day delivery which worked well for my lack of advance planning and desire to get up running asap.

RE the amplifiers/POS's: I talked to Martyn at VAG parts yesterday, as I was considering replacing mine after the failure of one of the channels. IIRC the amplifiers/POS's are about £105-ish. In his opinion they either work or they don't and that it is the poor/detiriated coilpack wiring that causes particular channels to fail and that he doesn't get much call for replacements. I hope martyn/someone wll correct me if I've got this wrong.

When I did my rewiring, especialy with the POS's I found that the electrical wiring schematics and info I found on the net, in particular the wire colours, didn't always match exactley to the existing on my car. This can be a bit confusing.

RE the rewiring of the coilpacks: inspect the connectors and if you can get new terminals (from maplins?) to rewire to this might be the best and easiest way forward rather than soldering. I would have gone this route if I'd really thought about it and researched it.

Lastly, I assume you have seen this thread:
