    Catch Tank? Unsure...

Been looking through previous threads on catch tanks and cyclones but still unsure either will solve the problem i'm experiencing.
Although i get the usual idle smoke from start up (goes when the engine is warm) the main issue i have is when i've accellerated 'on boost' then lift off, a plume of white/grey smoke appears.
I have done several oil changes and the breather pipes are clear. The exhaust is de-catted and as far as i can tell the engine is running fine with only the occasional ticking from the lifters/tappets? If i drive normally, as in not using the turbo, there is no smoke at all.
Does this sound familiar to anyone and can you offer any advice on the best cure?? I'm not the best at mechanics and can't afford to purchase any unnesessary parts...
Any help you can give will be much appreciated

    Cheers

      Hi Mark

It has been chipped (not sure which or who's but could find out) and has a scorpion exhaust. Apart from that it's standard.

Hi matey, Is the engine still 'breathing' through the oil cap? or has that been solved now?

Mine does a similar thing and so did Charlie. He put in a catch tank and it seems to have solved the problem , so it's next on my list

Not using the modded cap anymore!!
If a catch tank will solve the problem i now need advice on where i can get a decent 'tried and tested' one by next weekend. There's loads out there but i'm unsure which one to get due to the mounting restrictions in the engine bay. It seems most have theirs mounted on the strut brace, just wish i had a strut brace to mount one on to...!
          Any ideas??

          Cheers

you could always make a bracket for it to come off from the bracket that holds the ABS unit?

The mocal tank is a tried and tested. You could fit that quick and not need to worry about a return line at first, but make sure you drain it now and then.

              Cheers Greg.

Rough cost and where would i be able to purchase one?
Do you have any idea why my car is smoking like it is? Whilst wanting to fix the problem i'm also keen to know what's causing it??

              Cheers

TBH it could be oil seeping through the bearings on the turbo and burning in the exhaust so you may need to have your turbo rebuilt. Dont quote me on that though. try here for catch tanks etc http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/products.html

You can just disconnect the breather hose to your inlet hose (plug the inlet hose) and get a container somewhere to that breather. You will then see if it is the breather causing the problems.

If it still does it, it could be the turbo seals or valve stem oil seals.

                      Cheers Doug, i'll try that.
Don't know if it makes any difference but i have an oil filler cap that has been drilled through (5mm hole) and when this is fitted, no smoke?? Does this suggest anything? It's definately a pressure related problem but where and how is the mystery...
Do you think it's worth fitting the catch tank all the same?

                      Cheers

That does sound like a breather problem to me.

I might be showing my lack of knowledge here but... is there anything internally that could be blocked? All the external pipework can be checked for signs of blockage but how would you check that all is hunky dory on the inside?

                          Cheers

It sounds as if oil vapour, whether it be from your turbo, blow-by gases or whatever, could be going back into your intake system and so on. Finally coming out of your exhaust, therefore causing the smoke.

                              Cheers for the help chaps.

Will let you know if the cause is found and whether a catch tank was fitted.
