What r the symptoms of a broken piston ring and what is the best way
to change it.
i.e take the head off to remove piston or
leave head on and remove crank from the bottom.
is it worth just replacing broken ring or doing the whole lot including
crank shells.
dunno what the symtoms are, so i can't tell you what's wrong, but if you think there's something wrong with the bottom end, i certainly feel your pain having gone through similar trials recently.
having had my coupe sitting motionless for about 6 months in my garage i can confidently say that if you have to get at the bottom end or need to replace pistons etc... it's better to take the engine out and put it on a stand and do the work. it's only another hour or so to take the front end off.
Spoke to Quattro Concepts and they said u could not tell by driving. has anybody
known of piston rings to break. Apparently it's common on high boost cars.
If you pull one out to replace the rings, you will need to re-hone that cylinder - and it is best to remove the block for that otherwise you get metal everywhere!
You'll need the head off and the sump off to pop the piston out anyway - halfway there to pulling the block!

I thought you just had an engine rebuild?
Rebuilt top half did not touch the block. Never needed to as
i've never had to out of the last 6 audis i've had.
It's just amaising that with the same symptoms different
companies/ mechanics quote different jobs/solution.
What really cooks my noodles is that i can't put my finger on it
and like others here i must know the cause and cure to this intermittent
and curious smoke issue that tends to attack some cars after rebuilt with
hy-brid turbos???
To me it's a gremlin
but i'm conducting another leak down test this afternoon.
will keep u informed

do you mean by leak down test-filling the cylinder with compressed air?
