    Check your spark plugs...

Day before yesterday I saw smoke billowing out the exhaust, so pulled over to have a look.

My engine had spat out a spark plug.

It had obviously loosened itself. They were only fitted in May (during a service) and the car was due back in for another service in about 300 miles time.

Anyway, the plug destroyed the coil pack above it. The threads were also damaged, stopping another spark plug from being fitted.

The car's up at QRSport now having been recovered up there yesterday, and it's looking expensive.

The head needs to come off. There's no compression in the middle cylinder. It looks like something may have gone in there as the piston is showing apparent signs of damage.

    Gutted.

Out of interest, does anyone know a cheap(er) supplier of spark plugs for the S2?

Ouch - that is nasty... Sounds like what happened Doug once... Expensive & time intensive... Hope the bores didn't get ploughed with coil pack shrapnel !

Bad news m8 It's very common for the plugs to work loose on the S2. Hope it hasn't damaged the bores..

If the bores are damaged, what would generally be the course of action?

It would depend on the amount of damage. If the scratches are shallow (1 thou or there abouts) you could hone the bore to remove them. A set of new rings would make it right - cheap option. If they are deeper a rebore would be required with oversized pistons and rings - not so cheap option!

Would a rebore with oversize pistons and rings would give performance improvement, or would that be determined by other factors too?

Already sold one bass guitar this month to help pay for the road tax, insurance, mot and service that are all due this month too.

Bibby you can borrow my JayDee if you need a bass!

Gutted for you, fingers crossed the damage is not too bad. I'll check my sparkies this weekend- I changed mine 6 months ago and did it myself, don't know what the proper torque is meant to be either.

@Billman - just use the genuine proper specced Bosch platinum tipped ones, get them from VAGParts...

its the head that gives you the performance but equally its good to have a strong bottom end too . its your chance to put stronger rods in .

                          30Nm I believe Dan.

Cheers for the offer of the bass, but I still have two left fortunately. I really don't want to sell any more!

Cheers. Will be speaking to Tim tomorrow at Combe, see what my options are.

What does a rebuild cost then typically?
