    Turbo Hose tester

Hi now i have sussed out the resizing picture thing here is a few pictures of the hose tester i made at work, its basically a plug to go onto the MAF to turbo pipe using a wine cork to block the breather from the cam cover. I have 2 fitments, tyre compressor fitment and a 1/2"bsp fitting to plumb into a garage air line (!!!!!:eek2:WITH A PRESSURE REDUCER IN LINE TO LIMIT THE PRESSURE TO BETWEEN 20 AND 30 PSI:eek2:!!!!!).
    Graham

All i got was a small leak through the turbo seals, virtually nothing, but my turbo is worn

You wouldn't like to lend that to a fellow S2 owner with an annoying leak that is driving him mad would you

            Pretty please I'll pay postage!

                Hi Graham

Nice bit of kit. I am going to get my mate to make a similar device for me to solve my very irritating occasional overboost problem. Only occurs at the worst possible time, like this morning while I was trying to keep up with a Maserati (well it's my story and I'm sticking to it ).

But seriously. When you do this test, do you plug up any other hoses. i read somewhere that you need to block the end that connects to the IM since at least one inlet valve will be open. Did you have to do this.

Sounds like we need a newbie overboost how-to guide here

                Thanks

I have two pressure testers in 'the works' - one to apply pressure at MAF hose - another to block off the hose just before it enters the pressure pipe. If you don't block it their, you will force air past whatever valves are open, into the pistons and past the rings.

Other hoses to block on the MAF hose are the one that goes to the breather - use a 25mm bung and the one that connects to WGFV - use an ~8mm bung (or a suitably chunky screwdriver).

Forgot to add - don't confuse overboost with overboost protection.

Overboost is good - its that feature in AAN/ABY/ADU engines that gives additional permitted boost when at maximum load.

Overboost protection is bad (in a good way) - its that feature in the ECU which determines there is excessive amounts of unmetered air in the system and to prevent potential damage to the engine at high revs, the ECU cuts power to the fuel pump. Basically it means you have an air leak - in a large hose, narrow hose, the PCV sytem or intercooler / O-ring.

                      Thanks Paul

Yep, I meant overboost protection. I definitely have a leak somewhere in the system. It used to be very bad (IC O ring) but is much better now that I have done the "mod". However, I still get the occasional WOT cutout and the WOT response in 5th and 6th is not smooth and strong, it's rather ..err.. lumpy is the best way I can explain it.

I also have a leaky IC due to a prior meeting of the IC and crank pulley. It was fixed (by PO) but has a very small leak in one of the welds. I am going to replace the IC soon too.

                      Thanks

WOW, it only took me an hour to knock one up aswell, and we have just got another 2 meters of the 90 mm poly penco which i am sure will not miss another bit, i'll make one for myself, and the group can have one to pass around whoever needs it.

I now have Graham's pressure thingy and will try and fine my damned leak at the weekend. Just a quick qestion do I block the tube beofre or after the WGFV?
