my fan stops when ignition is switched off, however slow speed after run fan and tcp work when weather is very hot with ignition off, with engine running i only get fast speed on the fan?i thought fan speed was controlled by the ballast resistor by rad?

It's also based on temperature. This comes from the thermoswitch.

If you're not getting 2nd fan speed, there's a fault in the resistor itself, the fan thermoswitch, the wiring, the fan motor or the switching relay.

Here some more thermo switch info and about the colder running SEAT (FAE brand) switch:

So can someone (Mike?) re-confirm what the proper fan behaviours are as now I'm not sure?
What are the conditions for main fan speeds to operate under driving conditions?
Should the fan stay on when you kill the ignition? If so, in what conditions?
What are the conditions for the quiet after-run fan/pump to come on?

            After run fan

The after run isn't speed 1 like when the engine's running, the after run relay has a resistor in series with the fan-resistor,it's right near the fan motor-so it runs quite slow.I also found it didn't run much so I took the wires off the switch on the manifold and used a thermal switch in the warm air from the rad.It seems to run a bit more now.
Also the after run needs the ignition off.

It unscrews,if you can get to it,you could try moving the PAS pump out of the way and going in from there.
what else do you need to know?

Removing the PAs pump is enough? I have an RS2 eith aircon! with everything in place i can barely touch it with my fingertip!

                      Best description is on http://www.sjmautotechnik.com

http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/troubl...g/cooling.html this gives all the temperature ranges when the fan should run and at what speed.

There are only 2 fan speeds with the engine running on non aircon cars - speed 2 and 3.

OK, I have finally managed to be in the country long enough to test this damn sensor and can confirm it is history.......so question to FA users - What is the part number for the afterrun temperature sensor please?

                        Cheers n

You'll be wanting 054 919 369 B which retails @ 15.73 + VAT. This is the standard switch which switches on at 110 and off at 90.

There are other options out there though. Personally I run a 90/75 switch from an old school VW LT van This kicks the fan in every time I stop after a good run without coming on when I'm just moving the car around etc.

It does need modified wiring though. There was a mention somewhere of another switch that was a straight swap but wasn't a genuine part.
