    Rev Limits

    Hey guys,

Just a quick one. Do S2's and the CQ20V have rev limiters?

Asking as I wasn't paying attention and managed to go off the dial in 3rd.

I know it shouldn't be done but was just wondering if there is suposed to be a limiter there, cos if there is what is it set at??????

    Cheers

Should be the same in mine then you would have thought. Oh no something else to add to the list off odd car jobs.

That is unless anyone can tell me different, come on peeps I'm off to bed (work nights) so will check back when I drag myself out of the pit.

      Cheers Guys

Hey Ridgeracer were you any good at the game?

My 3B definitely cuts the ignition at 7200rpm. I suspect that it's got a mechanical system in the rotor? Presume the ABY does it differently?

@ Azman - You haven't found your rev limiter?! How much have you revved it? Be warned, my 7A cq20v had a savage hard cut limiter, not good, like when your not expecting it mid corner! Make sure you've got your seatbelt on too. You might go through the windscreen!

Are you sure you've got the right dizzy Dan?

I've not gone near my Dizzy in the S2, it's too difficult to get to it! It's not as hard a rev limit cut as on my old 80Sport which was definitely a hard stop as if the brakes had been jammed on - that was definnitely a rotor restrictor: when I took that off and put the Piper cam on, oh boy did that open up the top end

Definitely 7200rpm though regardless of how it's achieved, I've hit it many times

Oh dear something must be up as I have gone off the clock without realising it, only the once last night. I thought it was strange when it caught the corner of my eye.

Right then solutions please, I have changed the dizzy cap and rotor arm 3 months ago but that is all I have touched (aswell as the long list which goes nowhere near this bit )

Bummer I reakon it would go right the way round to 8Krpm too, sounded sweet till approx 7500rpm then a bag of c£$%.

When I first got my old cq20v, the power band was at an indicated ~5500 rpm, and the rev limiter was at about 8500 rpm!
Until I found a electrical multi plug loose under the dash. I plugged that back in, and the indicated rpms dropped. Power came in at 4000 rpm, limiter was ~6500 rpm IIRC.
Very strange. Fixing the plug didn't have any apparent effect on anything else.

The rev limiter on an S2/RS2 and 7A is ECU controlled. 7200 in a 3B and ABY, 6900 or 7300 (depending on software) in RS2.

                    The 7A is 6700 or 6500 stock I think...

@Mihnea - is that something then that you often adjust when you re-map, or is it not worth it on our cars?

4wheeldrifter. Can you guide me to this plug and I will have a play when it gets light again?

Sounds like I may have a bit of a problem then

dan, on a totally standard car there isn't much point in raising it, now on Tom's for instance, it was well worth it bumping it up to 7800 RPM

It was a few years ago, so it's hard to remember. It was somewhere around the steering column, if that helps.

Perhaps someone can correct me, but is there any reason (other than to hear the pleasurable sound of a roaring I-5) to take the S2 to the redline?? I don't think I've ever hit 7K - come close though - but as far as I'm aware I have a big flat torque curve around 3500-5500 and power peaks about 5800; so surely it's best to keep the engine in say a 4750-6500 range? Or am I being too conservative here?
