    Vibration

Hi Guys My lovely smooth S2 (ABY) has acquired a noise out of the blue at around 2000rpm,its a low type of noise like if are doing 30 mps in 6th & floor it you get that deep noise (thats the noise it makes) + it has also acquired a fine vibration on the gear knob .
As popular as this may be with my girlfriend & do not appreciate it.
It starts at 1700rpm & by 2300rpm its all gone & everything is back to normal .
Performance seems fine & so does fuel consumption .
Any Ideas as the local garages don't have a clue about s2 (a couple even told me Audi don't make a 5 cylinder turbo ) .
I cant locate the source as I need a load on the motor & it does is in every gear at the same revs.
Just thought I would see a these cars seem to get the same problems

    Cheers

It sounds like a little bit like the vibration I get at around the same rev band - I would firstly suspect the condition of your rear diff mounts and gearbox mounts, check to see how worn they are. Do you also get a "thunk" on changing gear when you bring the clutch up quickly?

      Very odd?
How do you tell if they are worn ?

        How old is your S2?
You need to get it up on a ramp and basically test the movement/play /resistance that is in them. I'm sure they're shot by your description. Do you get any "jerks" when you come off the throttle through the transmission?

Someone else had these symptoms and it was a cracked CV joint I think? I'd also check engine and diff mounts for play.

Cheers will get it up on the ramps tomorrow.
How much is to much play for the box or diff mounts to be fooked.
its a 1996 with 121000. no real mods.

that sounds to me as possible driveshaft from transmission to the rear diff vibration. i would check all joints on that driveshaft for play. I had similar problem on my 87 audi 5000 quattro, and took drove shaft off, and fron cv joint was totaly dry. i dissasembled the cv joint, cleaned everything and stuffed it with fresh grease, and problem went away.
