Hi dave, yes i did use 14 gauge wire it was the only stuff i had at the time as i needed to get the coilpacks changed asap. The coilpack connectors were salvaged at a local scrapyard which was handy as all i needed to do was solder onto the existing wires, plus they were free (in the tool box)
I am a little concerned about the heat build up under the coilpack cover though so i may remove it.
I could not have even attempted to do this without your very detailed write up, this is what being a forum member is all about, Sharing ideas.

I'm a bit worried now! I bought one coilpack from my local GSF so that I could find the correct plugs from the breakers. This one came in a genuine Audi box! I found the connectors in the week and ordered the other four coilpacks from the GSF mailorder line. They arrived yesterday but were just wrapped in bubble wrap and weren't in the original boxes. They also look different to the other one, they have a slightly different sparkplug connector and are silver all the way up where as the one in the box has a gold coloured piece!!
As Doug pointed out, they must be rejects or something!!
I finally completed my coilpack conversion today and I just went out for a spin. All was working perfectly and I was chuffed to bits.
I got home and popped the bonnet to check that everything was ok, only to find that four of the coilpacks were attempting to escape from the top of the engine!
