Nice one mars2 and aah. Sounds about right to me. A non-linear gauge.

Last night going skiing 1H00 drive on the highway at steady 160-170 Kph
temp site on dashboard 2 1/2 notches down from 90 and 86° C on the AC chanel 51
all the way
After pushing hard the car on the small mountain road for 1H05 i had some pic to 89°C on chanel 51°CRS2 chip by mihnea,PKM short IM, forge dump valve, 3" custom stainless exhaust, 18"X8" Porsche 996 rims, conti contact 245/35 Front 225/40 Rear, QR sport top mount, Powerflex bushes, aloy sub frame bushes, neuspeed 19mm RARB,Hard tranny mount, V8 torsen on RS2Comment

as i mentioned on my own thread the temperature is acting weird.temp gauge shows up to 105 degrees in traffic and only lowers to 97.5 to 90 when running without forcing the car, while the climate control showed 99degrees when the gauge was showing 105 and always has a difference from 5-8 degrees...
2 posibilities:
1)faulty thermostat(it is 82degrees).As i tried to notice a temp difference between the front water hose and the top water hose there was indeed a noticable difference.
2) the coolant system needs some air vacuation to release all possible air trapped inside the system.
I hope it is nuber 2 although since i changed everything, changing the thermostat once again is something i could doComment

mine does the same, around 60 on a run but in traffic soon gets up to 90ish when the fan comes on had a new thermostat fitted about 8 months ago did the same before and after
just been out to see if me expansion tank top rattles, and no it doesnt
will this really make a difference? and is this the part number

Mine sits at 80-85 all day after its warmed up, then in traffic it tends to hit 95, untill the fan cuts in then back to 80-85. I think this is quite good, compared to cossies, scoobys and supras.(from my experience)550+bhp s2 coupe-aiming for the magic ''700'':chit:

changed the thermostat. Now the readings are a bit better. We used the thermostat from the 2.5block for 80degrees.Now the needle goes tops on 2 lines after the 90 degrees, and the climate reads around 90.
still there is a difference and we think that maybe the water refrigarator may be having some parts blocked.Im going to use the car for now,and after a couple of weeks driving,we may change the main radiator as well.Comment

radiotor replaced.it seems that the 2/3 were blocked somehow. We were reading up to 15degrees difference in some points on the radiator, and also found a leak as well. Now it is new, temps seem ordinary and we are OK.
However does everyone get a 5-10 degree difference in the climate temp and the gauge temp?it seems that after the 90 degrees on the gauge the climate doesnt follow all that much, unless the gauge reading as described above from AAH is incorrectComment

Yestreday i got myself a laser temp reader and tried to make some measurements. The car had been on a drive,it was in my garage, outside temperature from the cluster reading was 40degrees.Here are the results:
1)temp on the radiator fins is 90,on top of the radiator was 80 and on the samco coolant hose leaving the radiator to go to the collector it was 76.
2)on the aux radiator, the temp on the top insert of the hose was 94 and on the bottom 80.
3)temperature on the water collector itself was 91degrees while on the MFTS it was 76 but i dont think this is accurate.
4)temperature of the sensor at the back of the cylinder block was 101 degrees!!
After these readings im getting more confused as to which is the actual temperature of the engine coolant system and which it should be...Is there any of these sensors faulty?im going to replace the sensor at the back of the block anyway, but all other sensors are new.Im also going to replace the plug of the MFTS which im now using pin inserts to use the sensors as my plug was damaged.I dont know if the pins are any different to the plug though to make any difference to the cluster signal.Comment

here is one more elaborate answer....
Made some measurements, this time with the WVTool diagnostic. Here are the results:
Engine temp: 95.2C
Gauge reading:94-95C
Climate reading:85-87C
Laser gun readings:
On the water collector: 90C
On the main radiator:87-88C
On the aux radiator top side:91C
On the aux radiator lower side:87C
White sensor on the back of the cylinder head:91-95C
After these readings i suppose the MFTS is closer to what the ECU sensor is seeing. However,my question is,why is the ECU temp so high when i have done all these alterations to the rest of the sensors(ventilator, thermostat)for the car to work on lower temps? If this temp is low for the car, then what is the ECU normal working temp when the car uses the original thermostat 87C and original ventilator 97-103C???Comment

I've got a problem like that too my car holds temperature 90-95 in traffic, but while faster driving it is still 70 and below. I've changed thermostat twice and also MFTS now I don't know anymore but the engine acts like cold because of the fuel consumtion
is there any more ideas??

after my europe trip and back to greece i came to realise that the gauge reading is indeed for some reason seeing what the sensor at the back of the cyl.head is seeing, regardless of the temp sensors on the radiator or the fan.So my conclusion is that it is good to actually see the correct temperature(which is what the ECU is reading) rather than the MFTS sensor is actually measuring(laser gun reading on the MFTS) because at the end of the day the most important is what the ECU will do in case of high temps.I think everything is correct for the temp to run between 90-95 in traffic and then drop in the highway if you use the 80degree thermostat i use nowComment

I have the same problem. Will try to change the G62 and see what happens.
In traffic 105 degrees and on highway a little above 90.
MFTS is new, so is the rad and stat.Audi RS4+Long sportquattro
