It would be relatively easy for a sheetmetal company to make up Coilpack covers the same as OEM but with vents in if people wanted them. The only problem would be one -offs would be quite expensive...The Perfectionist

You read my mind, was just about to post that as it's the same principle with I.C.E and Amp fans.Originally posted by Audi_CQWhat about making ducts at each end of the org. cover and use a small 12v computer fan to pull cold air through it? Just my 0.02$

so genuinly how much heat difference do you think there would be between a 1.8t and the 2.2 20v as the 1.8 t has a cover on top ok so its not as sealed as the 2.2 but heat wise you sure the 1.8 dont get hotter because the turbo is down behind it and also i thought i could remember reading somewere the best thing to do with the audi coils was to chuck them in a bin and use volvo ones or have i got my wires crossed agenuinly i thought still one of audis biggest problems was faulty coil packs..Comment

I think this lots of confusion on this topic...
It has often been posted along the lines that 'Audi coil packs should be thrown in the bin'. My understanding that is only true for the early 1.8T engined cars and fair enough Audi responded (eventually) with an improved part on later cars.
There are lots of ABY owners now starting to get coilpack issues because of entirely different issues - age. The coil pack is a service item at 120k miles on the ABY, AAN & ADU engine. Thats 12 years driving for my car ( and many others). Point taken that the original (Beru) coils for the ABY/AAN aren't cheap but with a 120k lifetime you can't really grumble.
My biggest concern for anyone fitting modified 1.8T coils onto the S2 is that they aren't designed for that application. The S2 engine is very hot under the coil cover and you'd be a fool to run with the cover off (in my opinion) cos of the inevitable dust, grime and goo that will collect in around the coil packs... so when you change spark plugs you need to be mighty careful that none of that crap gets down into the engine.
From what I know, the 1.8T coilpacks have their own heatsink fins to get rid of heat and these fins are modified (so I am told) to get the coils to fit under the cover. That's where I get really concerned. I know that Corey and others are trying these out in the interests of science but I'd be very surprised if the lifetime is as good as the original equipment.
Totally agree with the point that original coils are a b1tch to wire in cos they aren't nicely connectorised - that is a major advantage for the 1.8T style coils.
Just my thoughts on the matter.

There are AAN & 3B customers that are clients of 034 in California you know.Javad & Co are not going to go off and market a product if it has not been thoroughly tested and I highly doubt they copied anyones plans. What they developed is nothing out of the ordinary.Originally posted by UrS4boyCorey: I am guessing you are a 034efi distributor (?). As far as I know, 034efi did NOT do any extensive testing of their "kit". I believe (but I could be wrong), they just developed the harness (based, in part, on my DIY instructions) and marketted the "kit" on the basis of the reports that I and others have posted on AudiWorld and Audifans since Sept 2005 that it does work.Comment

Cheers Corey for the info, I'll get some cooling slots machined into the cover and let you know how it goes!

Well, I would beg to differ. I developed the DIY 1.8t coil pack conversion and posted the instructions to the internet in Sept. 2005. 034efi came out with their "kit" (nicely wired I will admit) in the spring of 2006, after a number of people with AAN S4/S6s in the States and Canada as well as a number of the lads here had done the DIY conversion. Since I posted the wiring diagram (which was the real work), I highly doubt that Javad started from scratch. The "trick" that 034 did was find proper connectors for the old ECU to POS equivalent. I have since found them, they are Volvo connectors.Originally posted by Wizard-of-ODThere are AAN & 3B customers that are clients of 034 in California you know.Javad & Co are not going to go off and market a product if it has not been thoroughly tested and I highly doubt they copied anyones plans. What they developed is nothing out of the ordinary.
There is also a comparable "kit" available from Apikol in the US that also came out in the spring of 2006.
