Well, Newsh and I had some fun today getting very oily hands from my engine bay...
There's been one heck of a failure of the PCV system under there and in fact most of the hoses in my engine bay! There was oil gack (technical term) everywhere and I can hardly believe the car worked at all! Two of the PCV hoses were split so it was venting oil vapour all over the engine, the boost hose in to the ECU was broken so the ECU hasn't been seeing any boost to measure, the vacuum hose in to the fuel pressure regulator was split, another one of those tiny little hoses off the t-piece was also split (all those fabric bound flexihoses were all basically b*ggered)...
Topping that little lot off, the MAF hose was pretty knackered (the rubber was innundated with oil and was struggling to make a seal), but the source of the biggest air leak was the intercooler hose going in to the bottom of the turbo - that had completely fallen off!!!!!
Basically, my engine was a shambles, it's no wonder it wasn't running properly - for a few months it's been running very rich, my fuel economy had plummeted, running was becoming a bit lumpy, then there was this sudden failure of boost the other weekend...
Anyway, after that little lot, we replaced all the little fabric hoses, re-attached the intercooler hose, replaced the MAF hose, and bunged up the end of the PCV hose until I can get a complete new set of those ones as they're shafted.
Car drove like a bloody dream on the way home
A huge vote of thanks to Newsh for his expertise and patience, and also for a blast in his S2 - ooh, how much for the RS2 upgrades? ...
So, what I need now is to replace those PCV hoses/ flame trap and associated gubbins - VAGParts? Or is a catch tank the way forward?!
I would post some pictures of the disaster that was my car's plumbing, but my pc has just crashed loading mup.sys so I'm on my wife's laptop...
Thanks again Newsh you're a legend.Ex S2 owner, now running around in an A4 Avant quattro...

I thought I had had this happen to me today. The car did much the same and eventually died.
I phoned Tech Services, aka Gavs20v, and he predicted a boost leak. It wasn't until the end of the conversation that it was discovered that I had been enjoying the Kasabian CD so much that I had completely failed to notice that I had completely run out of petrol...
Duh.

It might not be a 5 pot or an S2... but at least I have a 20v Turbo in my life again.Comment

glad you have found out the cause of your running probs......was the turbo to intercooler hose clean off, when i checked the other week it was definately attached as I re-tightened the jubilee clip down there as it was very loose?

The hose was in place but the clip had ridden up off the top of the hose and was just sitting there above. Everything very slippery down there so not surprising. What was strange was how difficult it was to find the leak, even with the pressure test kit and the compressor, the hose was a tight enough fit to still hold a little air, it wasn't till I really tried to pump it up that it became obvious there was a major leak, and the MAF hose had to come out to see it. A lot of the clips were corroded and had to be cleaned and lubed before they would tighten properly.
The PCV stuff is mush and the small bore tubing was in ribbons, I'm not that happy that we didn't replace the short bit to the ECU feed from the T at the back of the head but to do it looked like, in Dan's words, "a whole world of pain"
ISV and throttle body/tube out is deffo the way to go for getting to that stuff round the back of the head.
It needs a set of Samcos really as insurance
Oh and Dan, the hands will be alright mate, some skin grafts and a few weeks of washing up will sort it, a trip to the osteopath will soon fix the other issues and I'll be off the crutches in no time.. Oh and I presume you're referring to my "legendary" ability to lose things in the undertray..
Happily Dan's car has no airbox and front rad, made it a lot easier
It was a good day, an S2 boosts again!

It wasn't a pretty sight in that engine bay yesterday really was it!
I agree it could do with some Samcos as an insurance, probably should also then do the Mark H mod, and all the other tweakettes...
Newsh, I know what to bring with me next time I come round: gloves
