Coils can sometimes seem ok when cold but go bad when the engine gets hot. And the coils do get hot in an ABY..Comment

Have you checked the connection to the Air Temp Sensor? This can cause a misfire, usually above 3000rpm.Comment

I had a very similar problem on my UR and everyone on the quattroforum was adament that it was the air temp sensor. Is there a way i can check it? Thanks for your help3'' Longlife Exhaust, Koni Adjustables, H&R Springs, Full RS2 Setup with Mr Nugents RS2 Chips

Does it misfire once boost picks up or at all boosts?
If its coils i would expect it to become more apparent when the boost rose as its harder for the plugs to maintain a spark, my coils died in this manor, it was fine to drive until boost was climbing then it started to misfire, this was even more apparent when trying to get the car to boost, ie WOT. It did have a slightly lumpy idle as well altho i think this was due to the oil leak from the rocker cover that i replaced first.Ant

It only does it at WOT. The boost gauge gives a reading of about 20psi then stutters a bit as the misfire happens. Yesterday it was misfiring and struggling to pick up revs. Could heat soak have caused the temps to get so high that it broke the coils? What do u suggest go down the conversion route which would eliminate the POS and Coils as suspects or stick to the orginal coils?3'' Longlife Exhaust, Koni Adjustables, H&R Springs, Full RS2 Setup with Mr Nugents RS2 Chips

If you have access to another S2 willing to help, i'd go for swapping covers and coilpacks to see what happens, just a simple case of unplug and plug in the donor ones, simple and effective.
Ive read the other thread about these other coilpacks being tested to see if they survive, My 2p there is its about £320 for OEM parts that lasted in my car 13yrs and 170k miles, i'd rather not risk saving £100 on such an item that by the time it fails the seller wont want to know about doing anything about it without you paying further.Ant

Thanks Ant for your advice. Its a coincidence that u have had th same problems and my car is at the same sort of mileage and is also 13 years old. I have the oppotunity to get a set of OEM ones at a very good price so i think i will try and get them. The only problem is the conversion cuts out the POS possibility. How much are they to replace and how many are there? Thanks again3'' Longlife Exhaust, Koni Adjustables, H&R Springs, Full RS2 Setup with Mr Nugents RS2 Chips

Thats what i was thinking and the reason i was seriously considering the conversion. From what i can gather the conversion has its own amplifiers so therefor u do not need the POS is that right? If i replace the coils with OEM ones i could still get the misfire which would probably mean the POS need replacing. What do u think i should do?3'' Longlife Exhaust, Koni Adjustables, H&R Springs, Full RS2 Setup with Mr Nugents RS2 Chips

I think you need to be sure that it's definately an ignition fault first and obviously swapping coilpacks and or POS's with someone would be the way to go. Don't forget it could also be the wiring between these. If it is indeed an ignition problem then I would personally recommend the 1.8T conversion that's being hotly debated in another thread at the moment. I think it's worth remembering that new OEM coilpacks are just as likely to break down early as anything else. I think it'd be wrong to expect any coilpack to guarantee you another 170k!!'93 S4 Avant now back on the road complete with new shiny go faster bits.Comment

well i am going to get them replaced anyway as i only have history for one of them being replaced and the car is on 178k, so i think i might just do them and the thermostat and see how it goes. Does my symptoms sound like coil pack failure to u? is this what happened to u merlin? i will get onto Corey and see what he has to say.3'' Longlife Exhaust, Koni Adjustables, H&R Springs, Full RS2 Setup with Mr Nugents RS2 Chips

I'd bet on a coilpack or maybe a POS. I'd be very surprised if your problem isn't down to the ignition somewhere but obviously I don't want to tell you to replace the lot if then you find that it doesn't solve the problem!!
I did have a very similar problem for a long while but I could never conclusively diagnose a particular coilpack. I have a spare set of POS so I was fortunate that I could rule them out at the time. Eventually I completely lost cyl #4 so obviously this was easy to diagnose but I didn't fancy chasing coilpacks around every time there was a missfire so I thought it was better to change the entire ignition system for peace of mind.
