Well at least you have a clean ISV!
Go and buy a new cable. If you were suggesting trying to lubricate the old one, why make extra work for youself. If the idle is normal with the cable disconneced then it proves that the control system is ok (Throttle pot, ISV, ECU, linkage) so the only thing between the pedal and the throttle body is the cable.
Replace cable, enjoy car and give you transmission a break!

But I'm properly paranoid now, twoqu. Don't I (shouldn't I) have a spring-loaded accelerator pedal? Will check this evening (but will I recognise it?) but could that be banjaxed/dislodged and hence not allowing the throttle itself to return to a 'home' position at it's stop?

I'll get this thread to three pages yet!

      Thanks for everyones help...

      Edna'...

Well you said the pedal wasn't any different!
Ok, disconnect the cable from the throtle pedal. If the pedal moves freely without hanging up then its the cable!

I don't think the throtle pedal has a return spring
It relies on the force from the throttle body to return it. Ergo if you have disconnected the cable from the TB and everythings ok, then it must be the cable sticking!
