    Mystery turbo

I got my hands on a somewhat special KKK turbo!

    It is supposedly from MTM.

I am not unfamiliar with KKK turbos but this one is puzzling me. The ID plate is missing. There are NO markings on the hotside, not even a stamp on the inside!

    Here's what I do know(+/-1mm):

    Exhaust inlet 62/58mm(K27)
    Exhaust outlet 70mm
    Compressor inlet 62mm
    Compressor outlet 45mm

    Numbers on compressor housing: 5327 830 5090(could be 5890)
Center housing is oil and water cooled.

I don't think it's the problem, white something on the blades is quite usual with stock audi turbos (both 10v and 20v). Maybe they are running lean by the factory setup. I've seen it many times, and no problems with the turbos or the engines. Maybe it's somehow related to driving style.

The turbo is in good condition, but will probably be sent to a specialist for diagnosis/overhaul just to be sure. Maybe they can tell me what this baby will do:mischeif:

Anyone on here familiar with this kind of turbo?

by the looks of it that is a 27 housing. u can safely do bout 360 bhp with that max bout 1.7 boost.u can get over 400 but u wud need a strong bottom end.

There should be a number on the hotside which will tell you its size. Also if you can find any other numbers on the castings etc it will help to ID the turbo

Your hotside casting numbers have been ground off for some reason. Looks like a #9 K27 housing or possibly a #11 casting. I doubt its a #7 or #13 casting. The #7 was not used in competition as far as I know. The #13 is very big and used only on some track cars. Its a round hole K27 mounting flange which should tell you something. hint #1.

The particular distinguishing thing about the compressor side is the flush mounting ring which helps identify where it came from and what car it was used on. That is something I have seen before on some Special Turbos. Specifially the type of motorsport turbo where the intake ducting clamps right to the compressor housing along that ring. The fact that its water cooled indicates that its been worked on and that isn't the original center section. hint #2.

The pressure tap on the scroll is also some 2nd hand work. Not original.

My guess is that its a turbo from a Sport Quattro Rally car or a very late 10V from the 1984 season. Pre-S1.
The casting is a round hole K27 which would mate up to the SQ Rally car casting. Many of the 10V manifolds used a rectangular K27 flange although some of the later 10V manifolds when both SQs and 10V were running concurrently. The 10V transam car also uses a rectangular K27 flange. The round hole K27 started with the SQ and continued up into the S1.

The compressor side matches many of the 10V turbo compressor sides. Specifically the peculiar lack of a throat to the comrpressor. Thats because on the 10V where the intake runs from the firewall over the turbo and then swoops down behind the right front headlight to the turbo is cramped for space. So that extra material would be in the way The kevlar/carbon intake shroud is clamped right to the turbo after that 180 downward bend. AND... The SQ rally cars with the 20V head initially used this same intake setup and airbox configuration at the 10V cars. The later S1s have a simple airbox mounted right to the compressor housing like my car is configured.

If you ever want to sell this turbo please drop me a line.
I have two other Competition turbos similar to this one, but that particular compressor cover will be useful for a 10V project I have on in the works.

Thank you for your observations James. I've already browsed through your website on numerous occasions, very useful information.

Although some of the details may date back to the rally days, the turbo itself probably isn't that old. The flush mounting ring on the compressor side is used by MTM on some of their kits. It mounts to a 90 degree bend, which then mounts to another 90 bend with the Sportquattro MAF on it(I also have these parts).

The round hole K27 flange is also used on MTM's S1 manifold.

The turbo came with somewhat limited documentation, a receipt saying "MTM turbo sehr groß" That being said, I'm fairly sure about this turbo's origin, but less sure about its performance. Care to make an educated guess, James?

I think the round hole K27 is kind of a dead standard. I could be wrong, but I don't know if Borg Warner runs new castings of that format. The rectangular or split K27 is much more popular and practically interchangeable with the Garret T3.

The compressor cold side casting could be off a standard K27 turbo from somewhere. I have seen that type on some Audisport turbos so it could very well possibly be a newer turbo. The center is newer, but I still think the turbine housing is old. Some new some old. Frankenturbo.

My guess on power. With that hotside 475.
