This is a very untried and dont know if any one has tried it, BUT............ Why not angle the rachet so you can lower the jack down slowly thus undoing the bolt? using the wieght of the car for force. If you see what i mean???
it was suggested by another forum member the other day m8....but I cant remember who it was did it now!!!
I would suggest to not do this myself as you DONT want that bolt snapping in there if it goes Pete Tong.....(or rounding)
I have certainly learnt alot today and will not be making that mistake again. Ha
That plug on the engine was impossible to get off, in the end it was getting rounded off. So I had to use a plumbing wrench thingie to grip into the nut and undo it. I wouldn't advice this to anyone as it does destroy the bolt end but you can still use it as long as you do it up with the plumbing wrench thingie after, Sorry I have forgot the name of it.
Well I have now got that problem fixed was smoking for awhile but all is good now.
Thanks again everyone. Think I need a holiday after the day I've had.

Errm.
You NEED to use a new sump plug BOLT and copper crush washer (as in only crush once or it wont seal )
Ha my poor old car I feel sorry for it having an owner like me. Ha I no it is hard to believe but I did put the right gearbox oil in & engine oil even tho it has mixed with all the old crap stuff. Luckily it looks like the old stuff sat at the bottom of the sump and didn't move much.
The only good thing from this experience is that it forced me to change the gearbox oil which probably needed changing anyway.
Look me trying to look to the positive side of my complete **** up.
Does anyone know where I can get a new plug from looks like i'm going to need a new one when I do my next service. Ha I bet my car can't wait for that.
We have all done stupid things in the past, that's how we learn...
You can get the sump plug from VAGparts about £4 IIRC
The best way to get the sump plug off is a decent socket and 3ft breaker bar. It is the reaction between the Aluinium sump and the mild steel sump plug that makes it hard to undo. That said, IMHO it does not need to be done up as tight as some "grease monkeys seems to do it" They same applies to the filter....
Glad to hear you are nearly there...
Cheers,
Steve.

I went to my local stealer and got a sump plug for 99p. Plus you get a free washer with it! Made my day!!!!
Now all I need is to find a 17ft breaker bar to get the old one off.
