My car's got a new noise

Just got the car back, new clutch, plug leads, cambox gasket set, Bailey dv30 fitted, distributor checked, its a metal gear one and no oil leak.
I refitted the stock WG spring as Mihnea suggested, and boost is 20lbs solid now, cool. Pickup is better than with the old leads set which were so hard they practically snapped.. As was the cambox gasket:eek2:

Thing is there's this new noise, if I put my foot down in the lower gears at low rpm, like a creak or rattle, or in fact like thumbnail down a comb? I'm pretty sure its not pinging as its too loud, I'm wondering if its related to the clutch or maybe the dump valve makes a noise, I've never had a piston DV before.

    Any ideas welcome

John shouldn't be the piston DV, I've got the Forge piston DV and doesn't make the noise you described

No it's not the DV, I've been driving it some more and I'm 99% sure it's the gearbox, apparently 5 speeders are prone to it, oh dear.. Now that the clutch is all new and not slipping and the car is pulling hard from low down, its showed it up.
It's really noticable in second when you floor it, less in 3rd and hardly at all in the top 2 gears.

Is it at low speed just after you change gear?, had a couple of audis with the torsen box that make quite a racket in 2nd and a little in 3rd.Been told it was wear in the 'lay shaft' but cars have always driven fine.

Yep thats it, low rpm, high load, louder in 2nd and less in 3rd, goes away as the revs rise. Would do it in 1st but I almost never floor it in 1st, too much mechanical sympathy

That's the same noise I had on my old 5 spd box. I thought it might be the main input shaft bearings or diff bearings. A rattle that dissapears above 2,000 -2,500rpm. I've been told it's common on higher mileage cars and nothing to worry about. That is, unless it's getting worse quickly - like it was on my S2 after remap/turbo etc.

My F reg 90 quattro had done 80,000 miles(genuine) and it made nearly as much noise as another car i had which had done 190,000
