    Help-coolant loss

was out in the car yesterday, and on coming upto some slow traffic suddenly smelt coolant from the car, followed by a small white cloud of smoke from the grill.

pulled off road to investigate and on lifting the bonnet noticed a splattering of coolant somewhere around the front two cylinders. expansion bottle was down by a inch as well.

initially thought the worst, head gasket, but leading up to the leak the water level had never dropped.

anyway limped home then gave her a good checking over.

    1. took out spark plugs - they were all same condition - fine.
    2. checked condition of oil - fine - no sludge and no indication of contamination
    3. checked condition of coolant - no sign of contamination.

then took her out for a small run ( 1-2 miles) upto temperature then popped up the bonnet and noticed where i had sprung a leak cos it was hissing like a kettle

the hose connecting the cast water feed to the return/feed from the turbo had a small hole (approx 1mm) that was spraying water up onto the inlet manifold.

is this a common problem, bad luck or an indication there may be something more major wrong with cooling system.

any ideas on best way to replace it cos it sits just under and behind the p/s pump (i.e. pump off or rad out to get clearance) , part no etc.

Fairly common one this and a bit of a bu**er to get to. I've done it on the S2 and on my 100 a while back.. I think it can be done by moving the PS pump out of the way, I'm sure someone who's done it more recently will tell us.

This one blew on my engine as well recently.I am quite sure it is not an indication of something wrong with the coolant system. They just get old and burst.Replacement is another thing....I had to remove the radiator just to find out where it was leaking.Even with the rad removed it is still a bit tight to get to but should be possible.Atleast you can see it with the rad removed.
I ended up taking the whole engine out as it is due for a "slight" upgrade anyway so I didn't try to replace the hose at this stage.

any part numbers for the hose, or is it just a misc hose item??

not sure of exact size/measurements of hose but be nice to know in advance before taking part of the car apart to fix the problem.

I did this hose recently along with thermostat and thermostat hose...(and others!)
Not sure if it can be reached without PS pump/rad out...(maybe just ps pump!)

but the PN for the thermostat hose is

                  water hose 034 121 063 C
Also I would buy a new thermostat from GSF at the same time (£12 ~ iirc)

The Turbo Coolant hose I just took into my local hydraulics/hose specialist and it was a very common size so the guy kindly cut me off a "Sample" from a BIG reel and gave it to me FOC

                  Cost = 0p

I think the Audi PN for this is

                  078 121 096 H water hose (oil cooler-water pipe)

but I would double check this as I am not 100%

mine bursed all coolant out recently as well and it was coming out somewhere in that direction. Are these hoses included in the samco coolant hoses set?cause im already about to dismantle the engine for my service and inculde the coolant hoses fitment so if they include this part it will be nice!Otherwise i could just go and buy some samco of that dimention anyway!

Brian, knowing the speed with which you can swap radiators, I would expect you to have that lot done in a hour or two!

                        Good luck

                        Cheers,

                            Cheers mate ,

i hope i can. i hate it when little mishaps like this appear out of the blue.

Just picked up the hose from Audi. bit of a sod to find out what part it is cos its not shown on the coolant system diagram, but instead on the turbo schematic .

its a misc hose item thats normally sold in meter lengths for £18 , item 27 (part no was 020 262 001 or 002 if i remember). the schematic said to cut it to 130mm for the 3b, and 73mm for the aby.

cheers for all of your assitance and help , wish me luck trying to get it done tonight after work.

                            Brian
