    Hi Martyn,

    Nice to see you back,

I'm sure that you are thinking of Castrol R, which is castor oil based as used in racing cars and bikes in the 60's, 70's and 80's.

    The RS is synthetic.

Lots of mini owners who want to protect the gearboxes are going back to Castrol R as the modern oils don't do the job for them.

      Oil pressure still too low??!!

      Hi,

Have owned my 3b S2 for 2 years now and the hot idle oil pressure has always been about 1.5 bar. Previous owner advised me to use Magnatec 10w/40 but since reading the forums I decided to use Castrol RS 10w/60 expecting my oil pressure to rise. Sadly it hasn't Should I be concerned?

You are on the low-ish side there, but actually 1.2bar is the level where the pressure switch complains - and its actually 0.3bar at idle for t'other pressure switch to complain.

As long as you see circa 4bar oil pressure above 2500rpm I wouldn't worry.

Mine hit a record 3.8 bar at idle (after a leisurlely 45 min drive) the other day should I be worried about this? Seems to stay about 3 bar at idle all the time now it's getting cooler outside temps.

I see a constant 5 bar above 1500 rpm (maybe 1800rpm if it's very warm).

I changed my oil to Castrol RS 10/60 shortly after the last track day- at the time I had the Synta Gold 10/40 and I was getting extrordinary high oiil temps (140C), and rather low oil pressures (1Bar at idle). I was also using a bit of oil that day, as Lee will testify.
I immediately switched to the Castrol, which has increased my idle pressure a little to just on or under the 2Bar line. Engine seems to like it.

I may go for the Wynns competition 10/60 oil next change from Lee - I was a bit annoyed that the Castrol RS stuff doesn't come in a 5-litre can!

This is well known, Dan. The fine and expensive Mobil 1 5W-50 synthetic produces 1 bar lower pressure at iddle on my 2,8 V6 coupe quattro than RS 10W-60.I personally won't consider any other oils than the RS which is sold in 4 liter cans here and 1 liter bottles too. Tots in Switzerland uses it exclusively too for S and RS audis.

the oilpressure have to be at ca 1,5-4bar at iddle, and 3-7bar at max rev....i use to tell 1bar pr 1000rpm, but NOT over 7 bar, then you may have bearring trouble....... use the orgin oilfilter if you can get it....i've seen some **** filter!!!!

i have the same 5bar at 1500/1800rpm hot or cold, idle is between 2-3bar hot uselig 2.5bar,the place where i bought my avant from drives an s2 in the class 6 autocross germany,he is totaly hook on the s2´s,tolte my that it should be between 4.5-5bar over 2000rpm,(shing of a healty enginen),mine sometimes goes over 5bar when it´s hot(getting some stick).the higher the better you don´t wont to run out of pressure at high rpm.

From memory as soon as these 5 cyl lumps are run in idle pressure is 2 bar on the center console guage (not the most accuarate!)

Castrol RS 10w 60 is best out there, the trouble with turbos and cam chains is they destory the polymas in the oil used to give the viscosity changes hot and cold. the 60 (a lower number is better for good fuel econ) represents the hot flow index at 100 *C (higher the number the higher the oil pressure shown on guage up to a max of 5 bar- oil pressure relief opens then), 10w (w for winter) is flow index at 0 *C this is good for start up, low start amps draw and quick flow around the engine/ less wear.

Very complicated but castrol designed this oil for performance/ tuned/ turbo/ competion engines so go with this...

P.S I dont work for castrol!

I sell Millers CFS 10W60. This is available in 5 litre tubs unlike Castrol RS so it works out a lot cheaper. It is a motorsport oil and very suitable for our highly stressed engines. It is designed for a constant 120C and tolerates 150C intermittently. I have no evidence to prove that Castrol RS is any better than the Millers Oil Jay: can you produce lab reports to substantiate that "Castrol RS 10w 60 is the best stuff out there"? I studied tribology and also attended courses and seminars on tribology when I was a Spacecraft Mechanisms Designer...reports on engineering and tribology always interest me.

Millers have been designing and manufacturing lubricants for a heck of a long time and their products are of a very high standard. Their engine oil range includes all applications from Classic cars to special mineral oils for Drag Racing Engines for Top Methanol Dragsters. Their range also covers a massive range of automotive and industrial products.

I change my oil every 5,000 to 6,000 miles and have been using Millers 10W60 for a long time. It is superb stuff. My engine has covered over 153,000 miles, is hammered every day: I get 5bar oil pressure at cold idle, 2bar when hot at idle and the needle sits at 5bar when hot and driving. I used to use Synta Gold until I 'saw the light'. It is not suited to our engines at all and I was having some serious temperature and pressure issues using it.

I was so impressed with Millers products that I approached them to become an agent selling their products. They are extremely helpful and have professional on hand to prescribe specific lubricant for all applications.

@ Lee - sorry I confused the name Millers for Wynns! I'll be looking to you for my next oil change. How much for 5 litres of Millers 10/60?

Castrol's own website does not recommend Castrol 10W60 RS for the S2. They recommend

GTX MODERN 10W-40 or MAGNATEC 10W-40. The 10W60 does not meet the VAG spec for the S2
