Whys my car running so slow?!Lethargic S2 ! Expertise needed please guys!!

    Please help here guys
Got the car back together and its running hunky dory. Loads a new parts, new plugs, etc etc

Took Andy P out for a spin earlier and we both agreed it is no way as quick as his S2 (whcih is only chipped with Samcos)

Now I have thought this for a while but here is the chain of events..

1// MTM chip fitted (by me and I am 95% it is genuine) and car went like stink but idle seemed dodgy after chip fitting? (could be that as the car had been laid up for a few months and had boost leaks it only felt like it was quick...and it actually wasnt that quick!!)

2// fast forward..> ALL boost leaks fixed and car was boosting to 18psi tonight (standard wastegate spring and standard S2 map sensor) but when you floor it it just seems like it almost has the brakes on a bit (they are not!)

    Symptoms//

Andy reckoned car ran hotter than his...temp gauge showing max of a notch or 2 over 90 but it never goes below 90 when warm.

Definately didnt pull as aggressively as it should do boosting to 18psi.

Poor idle when warm...hunts all over the shop (I have totally and thoroughly cleaned the ISV, Firetrap, PCV and MAF)

    Bit hesitant under 3k rpm

    ALso/////

    Clutch seems fine

i was thinking tomorrow to check

1// That Timing is spot on

    2// Dizzy (3B)

3//If all that is ok then I was going to revert to the stock chips and see if it runs as it should even if I lose 6 psi boost (I think its 12psi stock is it??)

Does anyone have any ideas on what the hell could be wrong here please??!!!

ive spent too much time and ££ on thsi car to not have it running well!!!

    THANKS IN ADVANCE

Try swapping MAF's with Andy and see if your car performs better mate.

Maybe the MTM chips are made for the 300 KPA sensor.

          i believe there is a 250kpa map sensor in mine(genuine MTM),standard are 200kpa on 3b.

Then Maybe they are for the 250 and your ECU has the 200 sensor on.

When you say you have fitted an MTM 'chip',do you mean just one or both?

Its the only way to be sure IMHO.

I think you are bang on here Billman
The guy who sold me the chips was trying to sell me the 300kpa map sensor and also an Rs2 downpipe he did?

Would this make my car run like ****.....?? (having only the stock map sensor that is...including increased heat?)

Does anyone know where I can get a new map sensor to try in my ECU??
except of course the bay.de (i just dont want to wait that lon g as I wont have it by Billing )

                  Cheers

For answers about the MTM chips you could try calling QSTuning - they're the (only) official MTM UK distributor/fitter (according to the MTM website).

                      Best of luck.

Wise up - they only know how to spell MTM... They have no idea whats inside the ECU... All that sort of work is contracted out.

With a quick look at the contents of the turbo chip I could tell you what MAP sensor they are designed to run with.

If they are designed for 250kPa (I expect they are) but you are using stock 200kPa then your maximum boost will be ~1bar (200kPa absolute - tadah)

The 250kPa gives boost control scaling up to nominal 1.5bar and I'd expect the MTM chips to be running somewhere around 1.2 - 1.4 maximum.

I have a spare 250kPa sensors you can try if you like. Offer me a few quid and its yours !

Just open the ECU and let me know what MAP sensor is fitted - the kPa rating is clearly marked on it.

Just noticed your 1st post states you are seeing 18psi boost (1.2bar) which is beyond what I'd expect the 200kPa to be able to handle... unless someone has previously messed around with your wastegate or WGFV.

Have you checked the WGFV connections and/or renewed the WGFV itself recently ?

Wow. That would be brilliant Paul
Can I just check. Why am I seeing 18psi peak boost (maybe overboost??) on my gauge though if the 200kpA stock map sensor only gives boost to 1 bar?! Could this account for the cars "sluggish" performance even off boost or would it be more like at 1 bar the 200 kpa map sensor would just stop reading boost?? (eg nothing over 14psi)

I know its the 200kpa sensor from when I took the ecu apart!

I will definately try (buy) the 250kpa sensor please!!

Where do i pay!!!! You have pm mate

                            Cheers

Check your lambda probe. I suffered sluggish throttle pickup when my lambda was shot and I have a similarly MTM'ed 3B. A cruddy lambda will also likely give you unstable idle.

Other things that cause risable performance are leaky PCV system and a leaky boost hose system (although you say you've fixed all the boost leaks. Are you sure?).

Failing that, check your sparkies when you check the distributor and timing. It could be the dizzy gears are on the way out of course, the 3B had plastic drive gear.
