    Gauge readings fluctuating?

Here's a strange one for you all to think about

I've had this a couple of times, that I've noticed. Driving along, look down at gauges to notice I have 1/2 a tank of fuel, think thats funny sure I had 3/4 of a tank just now, then notice the temp only reads about 65deg. Then I remember driving home from holidays, similar thing and when I stopped and restarted the engine the fuel level and temp readings went back up to normal, so I just shut off the ignition for a couple of seconds and switched back on, sure enough the gauges slowly came back up to 3/4 of a tank and 85 deg.
Seems like bad voltage regulation or a high impedance contact somewhere, maybe a relay or the ignition switch? Any ideas?
