    RS2 EM and Turbo-mounting

Hi i was thinking about the Turbo mounting and the RS2 Exhaust manifold capabilities.

    So my Question is,

where is the performance restricting part of the RS2 EM? Are the runners too small or what?

Then my Question, in order to install a much biggerturbo, before i buy or built a custom Header can i temporarily simply use an EM extention between the EM turbo flange and the Turbo and also extend the Stock Downpipe.

This is because the Upgrade will not be happen at once and i am going to need the car in the meantime.

Check out this picture i.e. he uses a VERY long extention because the turbo he is going to use is too bis and doesnt fit. I am speaking about something much smaller only in order to fit the bigger turbo (with different gaskets).

Noone has an opinion? Will a Remote (small extension of the Turbo flange on the EM) mount of the turbo bee too Laggy?

Out of curiosity, does sommeone knows where the Problem is with the RS2 EM?

I would stay well away from the crappy design shown above....and only run an exhaust manifold direct to turbo....
That "design" is just to make a cheapo ebay manifold stretch to a top mount
I bet the exahsut gas velocity would be majorly affected and all the pulses would be totally screwed with a "design" like this

I would guess its runner size/design and the peak efficiency this log manifold can reach that limits the RS2 manifold...Certain log manifolds for other turbo makes have similair performance limits.

Cast = cheap to manufacture = limited to certain hp

If I were you I would wait until you can do both tubular EM and turbo at once billman

I was thinking about a lets say 5-7 cm Extention.

This is the Thread with the BMW with this Remote mounted Turbo.

It is very interesting (Page 4 is th eTurbo mounting Duscussion)

          Not advisable mate...for above reasons.
That car is not a very good example of a turbo BM

The whole reason for this ''remote design'' is space... there just isn't room between the block & engine bay to fit the turbocharger directly to the flange, i'm sure this design would work but i don't see any point of using it on are cars plus The leverage on that Extension pipe with a big turbo hanging is gonna crack the hell out of it without proper bracing.

Bilman, if your worried about RS2 manifold ... don't fit one get your self a tubular

Thing is i Allreadfy have one on the Car, and appart from the Slow Project progress i would Really see how the Holset Puppy i have would behave. Thats why i thought for an adapter plate-EM extention in order to install it with the Setup i have now.

I speak of a 5 centimeters long pipe + the Flanges. I think it will not make it undriveable or harm it in any way (with Turbo bracing of course).

I was just wondering if someone did something like this before.

The whole reason for this remote design is not due to lack of space....it's because the guy whos car it is, is a poor student and a bodge artiste

he bought the SS autochrome manifold..and decided he wanted a top mount. So he added this strange extender pipe on..

Ss autochrome manifolds do crack on their own...so I dont think it will live long like this

This is a 525i.....which have plenty of space for a top mount manifold....
E36 Beemers (my area of expertise!! lol) are tight for space due to BMWs canted engine mount design....but T4 equal length top mounts are still fitted and in operation as we speak...

If you want to do it, then do it Sure it wouldn't be an optimal solution, but if you want to try, why don't you? You can always swap back
The drawbacks have allready been outlined.

Today i spoke with someone with many contacts in Munich and he told me that at the beggining of the 20VT they have use with the RS2 like -Lehman prototype- cast exhaust manifold and with Flange adaptors K26 and K27 Turbos with over 500 PS. So theoretical with a Bigger Turbo the RS2 exhaust mani could do more.

He said the restriction on and with the RS2 EM is not the exhaust manifold it self but the K26 turbine housings that fit on it.

What do you think about it?

That is true, get it modified.
Get the flange for the turbo you want on it. Not many ppl have the guts to try something "new". Make sure it's done right, and then you won't be dissapointed.

I thought Hap Maquire had approx 420 WHP on his previous engine setup, using an rs2
manifold. Several others also in the 400 whp range. It is not the manifold but rather the small k26 housing that is the limitations supposedly.
