I'm thinking gasket... There was about 4bar in 3 and approx 6-8bar in 2 and 4 so thats consistent. I did go down there prepared for a full days onslaught of debug, but this is a good lesson in why to never forget the 1st principles - regardless of how complex the engine & ECU gubbins is.

Nice to finally meet a couple of lads on the same island with decent motors ! Cheers to Mark for the location, to David for lunch and that feckin parking ticket

We need to meet up more regularly, and get Des, Jim and the other locals involved. I was just really lucky to find the time for today's little trip South. Best bit was the 12mile detour along Boyne Drive into Slane to get Euros for that stonking toll road... Last time I did that run it involved a Mk1 Opel Kadett, Freddie Mercury and an ex-girlfriend OMG was it really 20 years ago when I last saw Slane Castle.

@David - hope it does turnout to be just the gasket (and not a cracked head) as you were planning the big turbo conversion anyway. Quite how the engine runs at all, essentially running on two good cylinders, is a testimoney to these cars and Herr Bosch !

    Until next time ....

Was an enjoyable day’s work, shame you didn’t get the result you were looking for David

We defiantly have to arrange a few meets in the future and get some others along. Great to meet with you guys and see your toys, venue is always open so stop by any time

@Paul: it didn’t take long for my dad to steal my homefry, we spent most of the afternoon driving around giggling Great stuff, and cheers for all the parts!

I told you he would like it

Nobody has ever tried one and said 'no thanks' !

Let's think of an excuse for the next meet - either north or south of the border.

PS - Don't hesitate to ask for my help with that 20V CQ conversion to modified ABY monster. I'll be only too glad to help especially if the electrics cause you concern.

Oh yes - its still on the cards - 2871 from memory ! Boy is he gonna notice a difference

We were chatting about this on Saturday and figured you would have been reckoning on getting the head off anyway for the turbo & EM change - due to the major pain of attempting that with the head in-situ... and good likelihood of studs getting stuck along the way.

PS - We need to bottom out details on those other parts... I'll PM you later tonight or 2morro.

phew, I was thinking then I would have had some serious hp parts to play with myself then
yeah the head would be coming off, stuck studs... not a problem here

Ready and waiting for the PM

I'll take you up on that offer when i have to swap out the wiring looms

@Corey, its one spanky clean engine bay you will be glad to hear Would love to see a pic of the gasket if thats possible, curious to see where it failed.

                Cheers

                    Bump

Just for other newer owners benefit.

Head gasket failure was the actual / eventual cause. Head was OK.

                    Thanks.
