    Types of turbo's

Been hearing alot about different turbo's just recently.

What ones are suitable without havin too much lag and retaining stock/RS2 manifolds and advantages witht them. not sure of all the types though

    heard of the twin scroll's

    and our KKK ones

what other derivatives are there and best compromise's

prob get some big replies on this one which will have to decipher but quite interested to find out.

Looking more at useable power without lots of lag, mid range punch with decent top end. not just a 1/4 racer's setup

Greg, the best turbo money can buy if you're looking at better midrange with a nice top end but without excessive lag is the RS2 turbo. It's been made specifically for the I-5 20vt engines and it is the best compromise one can make between driveability and power/torque. However the problem with the RS2 turbos (and Steve H can confirm my statement) is that the exhaust housings crack very often, mostly due to bad materials I guess, hence my work since a few months to make an RS2 hybrid with a slightly larger exhaust housing and turbine for increased strength/longevity. This has proved to work and the trade-off in turbo lag is almost unnoticeable, however spool up happens a few 100s of RPM higher than with the small RS2 turbine. This is for me the number 2 in the "top", the number 3 being my other hybrid which has a smaller turbine, and which, although HP is limited compared to the real RS2 turbo, has a lot less lag than the RS2 and spools up by 2400 RPM in 3rd gear and 2200 in 4th and 5th. That turbo might also be more adequate for the 3B engines, due to the HP limit these engines have because of their ignition system.

HTH and let me know if you have more questions,

Am I right in saying the RS2 turbo can be bolted straight onto a stock S2 without changing any other components?

What would the life expectancy be of a NEW RS2 turbo?

Once it were properly chipped, what BHP should we expect to see from a stock S2 with an RS2 turbo?

Sorry for all the questions, but if I like the sound of the answers, then I'm getting myself an RS2 turbo!

An RS2 turbo is indeed a bolt-on upgrade for the S2 but it will require rechipping. On a 3B S2, maximum HP is around 330 maybe 340, on an ABY, it can go from 330-340 (everything otherwise stock) to 370-380 (with the RS2 exhaust manifold, exhaust cam, intercooler, injectors etc).

          Greg,

I have the RS2 turbo and I'm impressed by the difference it makes. The car feels sooo much smoother and the top end is really something special. Once Mihnea has tweaked the maps and it's really on song, I'd suggest you take my car for a drive and see what you think. It should be all completed by Combe on 26th, are you going to be there?

I feel Im gonna start sliding down this slippery slope called 'Upgrading', hope the wallet can cope.

If one were to replace the standard S2 turbo (on the 3B) with the RS2 turbo, would it be wise to change the intake aswell, or do you reckon stock is a good way to go (would it fit)? How about the stock RS2 intake, does it differ from the S2?

                  Hello ZR

Dammit I can't remember my Dutch lessons from back into school days otherwise I'd have answered you in Dutch, sorry for that....

On a 3B, I'd rather recommend you to install the RS2 intercooler and a different fuel pressure regulator, with those parts you have a ticket for 330-340 HP, which is the maximum a 3B can do anyway, because of the restrictive ignition system. Anyway, real HP numbers will be posted soon after I tune thorougly Steve H's car!

If you need advice, custom chips, help for parts sourcing and installation, let me know it, Belgium isn't so far and we also have Jeffer from Holland who's an S2 fanatic too

                  Met vriendelijke groeten,

                    Ok!

And uhm... I live in Hoogerheide, about 15 min drive to the Belgium border, so who knows you might be touching my ride sometime in the future, lol

But do I understand you correctly that if one wishes to get 330bhp out of the 3B he can better fit an RS2 intercooler, different fuel pressure regulator and chip without changing to an RS2 turbo, or do you mean chaning to the RS2 turbo aswell?

Ooops, sorry for the misunderstanding, of course I meant changing the RS2 turbo as well. Otherwise there's no point, the stock turbo is already at its end at 285 HP...

                      Cheers,

Namur ey? Well, that's about 125km from where I am and about 90min according to routeplanner. Doable

Anyway, could you give me an idea on what an upgrade like you mensioned would cost in parts, and what about labour, ball park figures are fine, just to get an idea

                        So we're talkn' bout:
                        RS2 Turbo
                        RS2 Intercooler
                        Different fuel pressure regulator
                        Different chip
                        .... uhm.... different intake?

                          Hi All

I take it if i had a one of the chips being developed,i would need to have it reprogrammed if i later put on an RS2 turbo and the associated bits you mentioned?
Oh and how are the 3b chips coming on or are they still on the drawing board.
Oh and before i forget,i know questions questions can the ignition system be upgraded on the 3b without vast expense?

Rob, yes if you install chips for a stock engine right now you're going to need to have them reprogrammed for the RS2 turbo whenever you decide to install it! Not only for safety reasons but also for performance reasons!

The 3B chips are perfectly operational (just because it's been 8 months since I've had a few cars running them and I've been doing extensive development work on them) but Paul wants to concentrate first on the ABYs and have a perfect setup dynoed. If you can't wait anymore, email me, I have a solution for you

If you don't want over 330 HP (you first got to test 300 to be sure you will ever want more) there's no reason to want to upgrade the ignition system and actually a 3B running 330-340 HP may feel just as fast as an ABY with much more, simply because the 3B revs quicker due to the lighter rotating mass, but not everyone thinks of that!!!

                            Cheers
